Weekly Flyby update

Jun 17, 2007

Hi all,

I just wanted to stop in and give a small update on my week.  Not too much going on in the weightloss area...but i'm gonna do my detox this week and maybe that will get things moving.

I went to the dr. this week and was diagnosed with panic attacks...wonderful....something new to deal with.  He put me on 10mg of Lexapro....not sure what it will do to me...but it can't be much worse than the panic attacks.  I have been having major trouble sleeping lately...and i'm sure that it goes to these dang attacks.  I haven't told my family about them...they seem to hate it when I complain about being sick so I figure why tell anyone.  But I will add it to my medic alert bracelet.

But on a good note, I like my new dr. a bunch.  He is truly a nice man with a great bedside manner.  He is also a Internal medicine Bariatrician...and that means a lot to me.  I don't have to worry about finding a new surgeon to do my followup care...and that is a wonderful thing.  Thanks for letting me share this little update with ya...

Take care.

Don't you EVER forget.....

Jun 02, 2007

I just had to share this with all of you as a reminder that no matter how far out you are this CAN still happen to you.  So please don't think that you are exempt from it.

Last night, the family wanted to eat chinese for dinner...so I looked over the menu and went with what I thought was the safest thing for me to eat...steamed vegetables....WRONG.  I didn't even have rice or anything with it...just the veggies.  I sat for 3 hours trying to get this stuff to move...NO LUCK...the gas pains were horrible to say the least.  The need to  came and went for the entire 3 hours.  I layed down on my bathromm floor and just prayed for this to pass...swearing that I would NEVER do this again.  NO LUCK...I still waited.  After a few gas X chews the gas started moving and the food finally started going down...thank goodness.  Then came the discomfort the rest of the night...I couldn't even drink my water.  So fast forward to this morning.  I sit here with my protein shake that I made at 7 am, still trying to get it down.  The pouch is NOT happy with me today.  It doesn't even want liquids.  Boy am I in trouble.

So you ask why am I telling you this....to remind you that the POUCH RULES....ALWAYS.  I got so cocky thinking that I was invincible and wouldn't get foamies anymore....boy was I wrong.  My pouch has smacked me back into reality with a vengence.  So now I have to try to make nice with my pouch today and figure out what she will ALLOW me to have.

So what have I learned:

~Steamed veggies are the ...
~The pouch rules....ALWAYS
~Don't EVER think that you are past the foamies...cause it can still happen to you.
~Just because you have had it before, doesn't mean that the pouch will let you have it everytime.

I just thought that I would share my experience with you in hopes of helping someone else not to suffer the same fate as I.  Good luck to you all.

Weekly flyby update....

May 26, 2007

Just doing my weekly flyby to let you all know that i'm still alive and kickin'.  Work is taking up so much of my time lately that I can barely get here anymore.  I am so far behind on posts that I fear I will never catch up.  I have Monday off for the holiday...but I doubt that I will be able to get near the computer.  I am trying to make sure to have all my chores done before I sit down...lol.  Now I can truly see how life can take over and take you away from OH....and i'm not too happy about that.

My boss came by on Friday and told me that my probation period was over (was suppose to be 90 days...but he ended it at 2 weeks).  Now that was a true blessing.  That means that I will get the next holiday with pay as well as getting my incentive bonuses each payday.  Of course I will get healthcare and all the other good stuff too...but the incentive alone is what makes my day...lol.  It can be 1/3 -1/2 of my monthly pay...depending on how much I produce...and you know me, I am an overachiever...lol.

The weight is at a standstill this week, but I fear that this is my own fault...a few bad food choices this past week, but nothing I would truly be ashamed of.  I am getting in all my water...but doing it at work is pretty interesting...gotta pee all the time...lol.  But I am back to eating less than I was before I went back to work.

For the holiday I decided to cook today instead of tomorrow.  I would rather start the week rested.  I am cooking 2 slabs of beef ribs, some hot dogs, steak, some grilled peppers and onions, coleslaw, broccolli, and some baked beans.  I am a bit tired of chicken so i'm giving that a break today.

So that's the update for now.  Talk to ya soon.

Update on my first week at work

May 18, 2007

Hi Everyone,

I know that I haven't been around too much lately...and boy do I miss that.  But I started my new job this week.  I have been really busy...and beat down when I get in at night.  I like what I do.  But man, doing 400 pieces a day is a trip.  By the time I get home it's 5:30 and I gotta get dinner going for the family...then I go and relax for a bit and then prepare for the next day.  Those 4:30 mornings are nothing to sneeze at either...lol.  Now I remember how easy it was for me to slip away from OH when I was working my old job...but at least I was able to stop by for a few minutes in the morning...can't do that now.

I will try to be around on the weekends, but even that is not a gaurantee seeing as I only have those two days to play catch up.  I feel so lost since I haven't been on to read ANY posts all week.  Once I get my laptop and wireless connections set up in the house that won't be a problem though...I can surf from anywhere.  Hubby kinda hogs the computer for the night so I really can't get on much.  I can't wait to start putting money aside to get my laptop...I have been waiting for a while for this.  This is my gift to me.

But there is one really good thing about this job, I get one heck of a workout for 8 hours...lol.  Even though i'm sitting for the day, my arms are constantly moving and my body is twisting and pushing those pedals is working the leg muscles.  Now I just gotta work on those ab muscles.  Well that's all the good stuff I have for you all right now.  Hopefully, I can add more later.  Thanks all for letting me share.  Take care.

I got a job today...

May 09, 2007

Well, I had an interview today...and was hired on the spot.  I will be working for the Lions club making clothing items for the military.  It is something that I never thought that I would be able to do.  I have never sewn a day in my life...but this will be a new adventure for me.  Hubby is away on business so I had to call him to give him the good news.  The pay isn't the greatest...but man, it's better than nothing.  And the benefits are pretty good too.  Just thought that I would share my day with all of you as well.  Thanks all.

List of questions to ask your surgeon during your consult

Apr 30, 2007

I was given the OK by Bruce of thinnerself.com to post this wonderful list of question to ask your surgeon during your consult.  Hopefully, someone will benefit from this list.  Here it is.

Write questions down on a sheet of paper and write answers are you are given them. This is a few that may be of interest to ask your surgeon.

Doctor

1. Are you listed with the ASBS. What are the surgeries you do and why did you chose the surgeries you do?
2. Do you offer more than one type of procedure? What is the difference?
3. How long have you been performing this surgery and how many do you perform a year ?
4. What are the biggest risks/complications of this surgery?
5. Is the surgery reversible and how common are reversals?
6. How many staple line disruptions have you had?
7. What is the mortality rate for this surgery for you/at this hospital
8. What are the chances of getting an ulcer or hernia in my type surgery?
9. How common are spleenectomies at this hospital/doc?
10. Do you have a gallbladder policy? What is it? (I have noticed that many people have gall bladder problems after surgery).

Surgery Applications
11. Do you transect the stomach?
12. How much intestine will be bypassed? Feet length?
13. Is this called this distal or proximal?
14. How small will my stomach be after surgery? (Have the doctor draw a diagram of the exact way he will do your surgery on a piece of paper, because there is so many versions of each surgery. The doctors modify the surgery somewhat to what they feel is most successful. Some request the Fobi pouch style specifically because they want the restriction and less chance of staple disruption).
15. Do you use staples, stitches or blind stitches for the incision . How many staples/rows of staples do you use? Will the staples set up security alarms in airports?
16. Will my incision be covered with bandages and tape? (I’m allergic to traditional tape used on bandages and my skin welts up. Is there an alternative product you can use on my skin?)
17. Will a binder be used? How long do you recommend I use the binder?
18. Do you visit with my loved ones after the surgery to tell them how it went?
19. Does the hospital have a Weight Loss Surgery Ward?

28. Do I need to purchase any special wound care products for after surgery like gauze or peroxide. What do you recommend using to speed the healing?
29. Will I have an opportunity to meet with the anesthesiologist before surgery?
30. Am I given something to calm me before entering the Operating Room?

Reality check...this is for EVERYONE

Apr 09, 2007

While we all like to see those numbers on the scale drop...the reality is we aren't doing anything but adding stress to our lives.  We all have this "fantasy" of having surgery and the weight just melting away....WELL, that isn't gonna happen.  It will come off in it's own time.  None of us lose weight at the same rate, so STOP comparing what you loose with someone who had surgery the same day.  There are a lot of factors that come into play for each of us that decide how fast or slow we will lose.  Don't say things like, "I ONLY lost __ lbs this week".  When was the last time you lost ___ lbs in a week? This journey is about your HEALTH...the getting smaller part is the added bonus.  Take the journey for what it is...a chance to get healthy.  Don't become a SLAVE to that little box that sits in the corner of the room calling your name to hop on(scale).  Put that scale away for at least the first 6 months...only weigh in during dr. visits.  This will keep you motivated...and not drive you insane.  So my advice for today ladies and gents....

STAY OFF THAT EVIL SCALE...IT WILL ONLY DRIVE YOU NUTS.

Happy Easter

My weekend shopping trip

Apr 03, 2007

Hi everyone,

I promised myself a shopping trip once I got my tax refund, and that took place over the weekend.  Much to my surprise, it wasn't as fun as I had imagined it would be.  I went to WalMart in search of shorts and shirts for summer...only to basically give up halfway through the trip.  I started looking for the size that I now wear...only to find that they are too small...talk about a blow to the ego.  I wound up getting a size 14 in shorts.  I nearly said to heck with it and left cause I got so disgusted.

So to make a long story short, I settled on 2 skorts, 2 pairs of capris and a skirt.  And the funny thing was that none of the sizes were the same.  A 10 here, a 12 here and 14 there...unbelieveable.  Not that I was really "happy" with any of the items...but I need clothes since it is getting warm.  As it stood before the weekend, I literally had nothing to wear.

So I went home and did the fashion show for my hubby and he liked everything that I bought...although for me I was having and still am having body image issues.  I see the fat thighs...the cellulite pockets..the lumps and bumps in the clothes...I know you guys know where i'm coming from.  So then hubby says let's go to Kohls on monday...boy I nearly wanted to cry.  I felt like it would be another day of disappointment.  But I went anyway.  This time I took the 12 and 14 pants into the dressing room.  I was able to fit into the 14...of course.  So I guess that my actual size is a 14...but if I shop at JC penny I am a size 10...dang clothing manufacturers.

I left Kohls with a pair of shorts, 3 shirts a bra and a pretty lingerie set (which hubby seemed to like...maybe we will use it one day).  But for the life of me I can't get past this skin issue.  It's this fat girl mentality.  No matter how much I loose, i'm never satisfied.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would get to this size...but I still want more.  I wonder if starvation will do it....OK, i'm not serious but I do feel that way sometimes.

And here I thought that I would start my birthday week out on a positive note (birthday is thursday)...boy was I wrong.  I know this will pass, but dang it's annoying.  Just so no one thinks I have gained any weight let me assure you that I am still where I have been for the past 6 months (between 172-176).  SIGH...I guess things could be a lot worse....I could still weigh 270 lbs.  Thanks for letting me vent...I needed it.  TTFN.

PHASE 3

Phase 3 is the most liberal stage of the diet - by now it is simply one aspect of a healthy lifestyle rather than a weight-loss program. At this point you should be knowledgeable enough about how the South Beach Diet works to enjoy all the flexibility of the plan. That is why there is no shopping list for Phase Three. If you want it, if it fits in the diet, and if it doesn't undo all your sacrifices, you may enjoy it in appropriate portions!
