My story actually began about 2 years ago.  I attended an informational seminar because I was interested in gastric bypass surgery and learned through the course of events that my insurance would not approve me to have this kind of surgery because they have an exclusion policy and I didn't have any of the co-morbidities that would qualify me.  Also the group that I was interested in (Western Bariatric Institute) was not a provider for my insurance so I felt I had already hit a brick wall.

In October 2005 I learned of a group (Shasta Regional Medical Center) that was a preferred provider for my insurance and had a very high success rate with insurance companies.  I attended an information seminar, had my psych eval and nutrition assessment by mid November then was told that because of my anxiety disorder that the surgeon would not take my case (even though I passed the psych eval.).  I continued to work with the psychologist who did my eval hoping to work through the anxiety and after 6 months when I saw no progress I gave up hope.

In September 2006 my grandmother passed away and it changed my life significantly.  I realized my own mortallity and I knew that one of the things my grandmother had always wanted for me was to get this weight off.  I had my doctor schedule me for another sleep study in October 2006 and after I was told that I had severe sleep apnea I made an appointment for a consultation with Western Bariatric Institute.  I had my consultation on November 9th and explained my anxiety to the surgeon and he said "If your willing to get healthy than I'm willing to help you achieve that goal".  I was so excited!!  I attended the mandated support group meeting on December 2nd, had my psych eval on December 19th, had my nutrition assessment and an UGI on December 26th and got a call that everything was great and that it was being submitted to the insurance for approval on December 28th.  Now I am in the waiting pattern but it's finally happening!  I have to loose 20 pounds pre-op and I have begun modifying my diet.  The hardest part is giving up my Coke but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so I just have to stay focussed.
