Why WLS Patients Should Not Drink While They Eat - a Demo

Dec 06, 2012

I have a lot of trouble with this. To be honest, this is probably the toughest part of my journey so far. This demo will help me keep it in prospective. Ir was shared by another member of this site. I wanted to share it to!

Hospital Stay

Oct 08, 2012

I had to be at the hospital at 6 am for a 9 am scheduled surgery time. The surgeon was running behind. I ended up being wheeled into the operating room at 11 am. Surprisingly enough, the time passed rather quickly. I was out of surgery/recovery and up in my room by 1 pm. I felt so SO very out of it. Well, duh, I was. My mom and her sister in law were there with my husband. My teary eyed mom kissed me and then she left. She was SO worried about this surgery. Well, to be fair, she would be worried about ANY surgery. My husband was starving so he walked across the parking lot to McDonalds. I remember him bringing his food back to the room since he did not want to be gone from my side for very long. OMG, the smell of that food had me feeling like I was going to hurl at any moment. I think that was the first time in our marriage that I was actually extremely grateful that he eats so fast. Once the food was gone, I felt okay.

I was up and walking within a few hours. My husband walked with me each time. He was so encouraging. He wanted to spend the night with me. I talked him into going home to get some rest. He left around 8-8:30 that night. I told him that there was no way that he would get any kind of sleep or rest in that room with me. He was afraid that if I needed anything during the night, the nurses would not come quckly enough to help me. He was afraid that if I needed to go to the bathroom, the nurse would take too long to come help me. He worried for nothing. I could get out of my bed if needed. And, I had the most AMAZING nurse on the night shift. She came and checked on my very often. I woke up about every hour and a half to two hours. And, each time I would get up and walk 2 times up and down the hallway, go to the restroom, and get back in bed. My nurse. Krystle, My amazing nurse would then come in and reattach my leg "thingies". I can't remember what they are called.

Day 7 of the Pre-Op Diet

Sep 17, 2012

Day seven went good! I had a protein shake, soup, non-fat frozen yogurt, soup, protein shake, drinkable yougurt. Amazingly enough, I felt full! BUT, I will have to say that today was the worst day for strong cravings. I could not stop craving tacos from Taco casa!

LOL

Surgey Tuesday morning!

Day 6 Pre-Op Diet

Sep 16, 2012

Today went very well. I had my protein shake for breakfast, soup for lunch and afternoon snack, a SF fudgsicle, and a protein shake for dinner. It really amazes me how quickly I fill up on such little liquid. This is really getting me excited for my "lesser" appetite post-op! One more day of the pre-op diet and then it is SHOWTIME!

I have not been scared or apprehensive of the surgery yet. I have no clue if this is normal or not. Maybe it will all hit me tomorrow? I guess tomorrow will tell!

Day 5 of the Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Sep 16, 2012

Day five went great! I woke up at 6 to go volunteer at Hearts and Hammers. I got there at 7:30 and qorkd until 2:30. I realized how out of shape that I am. I was on my feet for almost the entire time we were there. I scraped paint, scraped burglar bars and primed the house. It was tough work but so very rewarding. I came home aching in places that I did not even know coul ache. I ate my soup and took a 2 hour nap. This is something my company does every September. I hope that next year I wil be 100 pounds lighter when I am volunteering. Food was provided for the entire volunteer team. YUMMY smelling chicken strips, mashed potatoes with gravy, cole slaw and dinner rolls. I was so proud of my will power today. But, I did eat the minute I got home. I was starving by then!

I noticed that today, it took so little soup each time I ate to fill me up. I felt like if I had eaten an entire can of soup, I would have been sick to my stomach. That is so weird to me. My appetite is usually killer. I guess it is helping me conceptualize how little food it will take post-op to fill me up.

Day 4 of the Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Sep 16, 2012

Well, like everyone says, each day gets easier. Day 4 was a relative breeze. I had my protein shake for breakfast and I actually made it til 11:30 before my next meal! This was exciting!! I had soup for lunch and a protein shake in the afternoon. Dinner was soup yet again. But, I did not feel deprived. I was not hungry after my shakes and soup. I also felt very energetic today unlike my first few days when I felt like I could have fallen asleep at any given second. Tomorrow I am volunteering for Hearts and Hammers. I will be helping repair a house for someone who could not afford to do it otherwise. It will be a lot of physical work. I hope I am up to the challenge.

Day 3 of the Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Sep 14, 2012

Day 3 went MUCH better than day one or 2. I had my protein shake for breakfast around 7:30, tomato soup around 10:30, a yummy broccoli/cheese flavored soup for lunch, mushroom soup for dinner and a protein shake. Believe it or not, I was TOTALLY full on just liquid. I would have never imagined that would have been possible. I will admit that when work catered in lunch, I left so I would remove myself from temptation and to feel less "left out". My co-workers are so sweet. When I came back (after they were done eating) they all told me how the food was not that great and I really didn't miss much. I honestly have no doubt that the food was delicious. They really do support me and do anything that they can to try to make me feel good. My son had a football game tonight and I went to the concession stand to get my husband and son some cheese fries. As I carried them back, they smelled soooooo good. I was very proud of myself that I was not tempted to cheat and eat one. WILLPOWER BABY!

Oh! I did have a non fat, reduced sugar frozen yogurt. Caramel...YUMMMMMMM. I definitely do not feel deprived as I eat that. It is SOOO good!

Day 2 of the Pre-Op Liquid Diet

Sep 12, 2012

Day 2 went MUCH better than day 1. I felt fuller for a little bit longer than day 1. Day 1, I was hungry every 2 hours, today, it was more like every 3 hours. When I did "eat" my liquids, they all felt heavier on my stomach. Not heavy in a bad way. More like the liquids sat on my stomach like solid food. Plus, I had a busy BUSY day at work. I think that kept my mind off of my stomach :)
