One Foot In Front Of The Other: A WLS Journey

Another quiet day.  Cold and foggy out so I stayed inside and walked in the living room and read more of  “The Beck Diet Solution train your brain to think like a thin person” By Judith S. Beck.  It’s been helpful in combating my head hunger already and I’m only on Chapter 6.   I've found this to be very helpful in sticking to my plan. It takes you through exercises to think positively about being thin and how to get there mentally. I have a calendar program that pops my goals up every 3 hours. On some days I reset them for every hour because I'm feeling down or want to graze. It is NOT a diet book. It gives good tools to help you through head hunger.

My Advantage Response Card (these are the reasons I want to get to my goal and motivational thoughts and helpful hints)

Oh Hel$l It's A Great Day!
I'll wear smaller clothes
I want to learn to roller blade
I want to be able to kayak
Each time I exercise I get closer to my goal
I'll look better
I'll be able to wear stylish outfits
I'll be in better health
I'll be able to exercise longer & easier
I'll feel better
I'll have more energy
I'll be more physically fit
I'll be able to camp without CPAP
No more negative overweight comments from family
Always sit down when you eat
Eat slowly!
Give yourself credit! Pat yourself on the back.
Notice what you eat, texture & flavor, savor it.
my pedometer is my new friend, take it for a walk (this is my food replacement friend)
I CAN do this long term using small amounts
Did you write in your food journal?

Seeing these several times a day helps me keep focused on the end goal. It's too easy for me to forget when I'm down or stressed and go back to my old grazing habits.

One Foot In Front Of The Other: A WLS Journey

Jun 12, 2008

I've been keeping my own blog at home.  Others' have been helpful to me I'm posting mine here.  I hope my process helps someone.  I'm the type to research things to death and try to be prepared.  I've been searching for everything I can find to make sure I can really do all the follow though once surgery happens.

A WLS Journey

My friend, Daniel, sent me a link to http://body.aol.com/condition-center/diabetes/news/article/_a/does-operation-for-obesity-cure-diabetes/20080422151909990001 for the article “Does Operation For Obesity Cure Diabetes?”.  My web search began in earnest.

4/24/08
Another friend, Stan, mentioned he saw a segment on TV,  “Does Operation For Obesity Cure Diabetes?”.  The aol link above is the transcript for this show.

Several websites mentioned using the glycemic index for meals post surgery.  Interesting I bought those books and was just starting to go through them.  OK, have we got kismet going on here??

I found OH Challengers and joined.  Nice group with personal goals to keep them and me motivated and accountable without being on your case if you don't make it.  It's a very supportive group.

At lunch I watched people eat to see how many times they chewed.
I met with Dr. Jossart to discuss whether WLS is for me.  With Type II diabetes, a BMI of  48.3 and being on the CPAP the last 7 years, I’m a good candidate.  I received more documentation of what to do post surgery.  Surgery will have to be done at Good Samaritan Hospital due to insurance constraints.  I met Wendy (waves to Wendy) in the waiting room and she happily explained all she’d been through, was able to eat, exercise, etc.  She was very nice and friendly.  A very good thing at this stage of my confusion. There is SO much information to digest!

May 13, 2008
I won the OH Challengers goodie box for  posting new items.

May 14, 2008
Dietitian and psych evals. I ordered  the following books that Tara recommended:
The Success Habits Of Weight Loss Surgery Patients by Margaret Furtado, Lynette Schultz
The Emotional First Aid Kt: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery  by Cynthia L. Alexander
Exodus from Obesity: The Guide to Long-Term Success After Weight Loss Surgery  by Paula F. Peck
Before And After: Living and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by Susan Maria Leach
Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery  by Pat Levine

My first WLS support group meeting.  It was interesting to hear how everyone’s journey is a little different, nice to meet folks and learn more.  Someone brought in leftover protein goodies for we newbies to share.  That was great, less to buy to try.  I made 3 exercise CDs of music to take with me on our trip.

May 20 – 29, 2008 271.2
On vacation.  Drove to Sedona, AZ with stops to see a couple friends along the way.  We ate out a few times, toured ancient pueblos and I walked my 10k steps all but 1 day.  I lost ½ lb.  It was very difficult not having a scale!!  All the books I ordered came the day we left so I was able to start reading.  My thirst for knowledge seems to be insatiable.

May 22, 2008
I called and paid half my after insurance fee so it didn’t all come in one month.  They still didn’t have the psych eval and would check on that.  I ordered some vitamins and a few protein things to try.

May23, 2008
I picked up The Beck Diet Solution by Judith S. Beck at the Flagstaff Barnes & Noble and started reading it the first night in Sedona.

May 24, 2008
I bought more protein powder, it was on sale.

May 25, 2008
Read more of The Beck Diet Solution.  It’s helped me not eat a few times already.  I used MIL’s clock timer during meals and we all chewed 20-30 times each bite and prolonged dinner.  It worked so well I ordered a timer like it for me.

Waiting patiently for insurance approval...NOT  Waiting is not my forte.  Having a hard tome today. Read a passage in “Exodus from Obesity” about losing your friend food.  I sent Tara an email.  Probably a normal up and down thing.
Received a box from the doctor’s office with vitamins and protein things to try.
So far my fav protein powder is Jay Robb’s chocolate.  Protein 25g, calories 110, fat 0, carbs 1.
Made my Memorial Day weight goal.   On to the July 4th goal of 262.

6/1/08
I’m reading various books and learning left and right. Waiting to hear from insurance.

6/2/08  268.8
Still waiting and reading.  Also scouring websites for recipes for post surgery.

Up to 3.25 miles on my pedometer, 11,256 steps.  My goal is 10,000 a day 5 days a week. Received Pampered Chef clock/timer in the mail.  Will use that to time bites.  I eat too fast.  Setting my fork down for one minute to chew and swallow will be a good way to slow me down.  Batteries didn’t arrive with it.  Ordered those today.

6/4/08  270.1
received email from Tara about mourning food being the same as morning a person who dies.  I’m on step 2 and I haven’t had the surgery yet.  Maybe post surgery will be easier if I keep getting through things beforehand.  I’m up to 64 oz of water a day and 70 – 80 g of protein.
Called to see where things stand with insurance approval

6/5/08  268.5
Received receipt from Dr’s office for half of non-covered insurance bill and a note from Marilyn saying they were still waiting for dietitian and psych eval.   I sent both an email asking when their reports would be done and asking whether I should reschedule my time off.  Previously last week in June and first week in July.

6/6/08  268.3
Received email from Tara saying her eval is done and Erica would contact me to schedule surgery.   Jeannette called saying her eval went in May 22 and she’d forward a copy to Marilyn.
I made another exercise CD for my sansa.  Music really helps me walk, dance, keep moving.

6/7/08   268.3
Saturday..Weekends seem to be hardest for me to exercise.  Weird since we’re retired and weekends shouldn’t matter anymore...
Weight stalled last 3 days.  I didn’t exercise much today.  Didn’t eat much either.  Experimented with SF pistashio pudding and egg white protein powder.  Tasted better before the egg white powder was put in..it tastes salty. This calories in, calories out seems to have taken hold in my brain.  After dinner I still had less than 600 calories.  I’m trying hard to eat more. I had the Kay’s Naturals protein pretzels from my protein goodies box.  It doesn’t really taste like pretzels but tastes good.  Kind of cheesey at first then..not sure what..soy?
Waiting is the hardest.

I’m practicing not drinking with my meal.  It’s a hard one as we always had drink with our meal due to a fight between my mother and grandmother when I was 7.

Getting my water in isn’t a problem thanks to SweetLeaf  stevia liquid Lemon Drop, English Toffee and Valencia Orange.  20 drops per 24 oz bottle.  When I tire of that, I use DaVinci Sugar Free Syrups, germna chocolate, blueberry and hazelnut are my favorites.

rec’d email from erica with little useful information on a surgery date.  I responded with several questions.
I created WLS Friendly “Potato” Salad and poted to OH Challenger’s mailing list.  Why haven't I done this before now?
Met Jeanne from Lihue on the OH chatroom.  She’s having surgery tomorrow 2pm with Dr C.
I’m frustrated and feeling out of the loop in my surgery preparations.  I ate more today..chocoperfection & gnu fiber bar.  Not terrible, but binging nonetheless.   Reading back in OH BB postings. Requested Lea’s spreadsheet on vitamins.
Continued reading “The Success Habits of Weight-Loss Surgery Patients” by Colleen M. Cook.

Nicole called from Dr J’s office and I now have all the information I need and I'm happy about that..  Approval was resubmitted yesterday after BC kicked it back saying get approval from MRMIP.   I should know something in 2 weeks.  Dr. J is on vacation the last week in June and first week in July so the first available surgery is July 7 or 8 at Good Sam or  7/10 or 7/16 at California Pacific Medical Group.  I appreciate that she took time to call and get me all the answers I needed to feel good about this process.  Another month of waiting, though..I may have to go on vacation to keep my mind from spinning. lol

Just walking today.  Feeling a bit low.  DH isn't being as supportive as I thought he'd be.  We talked about it at lunch.  He's going to read a few books my psych suggested so he understands what I'm going though.  I'm thinking I'll ask someone else to be my coach.  I started taking all my vitamins.  Using Diabetic multi to use them up before surgery.  I'm still amazed at the OH before and afters.  I can't stop looking at them.  Could this really be me in a year?  YES! I think the B-12 is jazzing me up.  Stan asked if I was on something when we talked on the phone.  He was right..I do feel jazzed to the max.  I’m still wading through OH and finding new information.  Found an over 50 group that looks interesting.

Walked and read.  Still feeling a bit low.  Maybe knowing there’s a longer wait than I expected. Made some protein pudding that turned out well.  Have over 11k steps today.  Net calories 325.  I made my week’s goal and have 2 to go yet.  That should make next week a bit easier.  I was beginning to wonder if I was going to make my Independence Day goal of 260.  I’m pretty sure I will now.  I’m thinking of going to a difference support group this weekend to see if there are different people and how they interact.  I liked the first one...just curious how other meetings are run and I think it would be good to connect with more WLS folks in person.  Doing better this evening.

Quiet day of reading.  Went to friends to fillet fish they caught.  Took 6 home and froze 2/3 of them.  Dr J’s office called saying Blue Cross wants a letter of support from my GP.  I found one online, altered it and sent it to my GP for comments and revisions, then FAXed it.  Hopefully I’ll get this next week and start round 3 of the approval process.  Do they really think I would go ahead without having discussed it with my GP?  I’m probably looking at mid July as a surgery date now.   So I’m annoyed but doing well.
