Boomer Loser Doing Great in MD

Jan 26, 2011

I turned 65 last year and decided that it was time to finally do something about my weight problem; I had moved from 300 lbs. 20 years ago to 426 at my heaviest - and along the way I developed diabetes, sleep apnea and aching joints.  When the diabetes kicked in 2 years ago and I went on insulin and other meds, losing weight was increasingly difficult.  I made the "decision" last March, but had to go through that long six month (last meal) to qualify under my insurance.  I had sleeve surgery on Nov. 24 and have been working the program pretty hard since -  I lost 24 lbs. before surgery and now, at 6 months post op, I'm down a total of 135 lbs., to 289 - I still have 40 lbs.+ to lose.  I feel great!  Diabetes was gone when I came home from the hospital, also gone was sleep apnea, and now, my Dr. has cut my Rx meds down to nothing.  Yes, I miss some things - cocktails with wifey in the evening and nice, big breakfasts - but these are small sacrifices when considering the improvements to my overall health.  My minimum exercise is to walk a vigorous 3 miles daily and now I'm walking when I play golf and doing heavy gardening and other household activities with ease  I do some free weights and go to a local gym to do resistance training.  Surgery was the best decision I've made in many years.  We're planning a trip to Italy later this year and it will be a wonderful reward for the new me.
