Surgery on March 19th aborted

Apr 29, 2009

I was scheduled for lap band surgery on March 19, 2009.  During the surgery, the doctor's discovered that my stomach was herniating my diaphragm.  I forget the name of this specific hernia, but the surgeon had to abort the procedure due to the high risk of slippage if he repaired my hernia and installed the band.  So I had to go through the insurance approval wait.  This time I was sitting on pins and needles because I didn't think that the insurance company would approve another procedure, but they did.  So I am now scheduled for RNY and hernia repain on June 8.  I am excited yet nervous.

Hi!

My name is Jessica.  Like most people on this site, I have struggled with my weight all of my life.  At one point I lost 70 pounds on my own, but the stress of my father's death and other stressful events in my life caused me to turn to food for support.  I gained all of the weight back plus some.

I have been hesitant about the surgery until recently.  I do not yet have any serious health issues due to my obesity, but I don't like the way my knees feel when I climb the stairs.  I hate traveling for work for fear that the seatbelt doesn't fit or the plane will not have enough extensions.  I especially hate chairs or as I like to call it "chair syndrome".  There are times when I sit in a chair and I don't fit.  It is really embarrassing when I am in a meeting with one of my bosses or worse, the client, and I ooze out of the chair.  My next thought is, 'is this chair going to break?'  I haven't had that happen yet and I pray that it doesn't.  But even more depressing are those airline seats.  Only once has my neighbor offered to lift up the arm rest for my comfort as well as his.  It is bad enough that the standard seatbelt doesn't fit around me, but it is worse when your neighbor is pressing down on the arm rest.  I hate chairs.

I have attended an information session at the CMC-Bariatric Center.  I had my initial consultation with a surgeon on 12/26 and will meet with the dietician next.  I have initially thought I would go with the band, but I have not completely ruled out the RNY.  Thus far, obesityhelp.com users have provided me with issues that I need to consider and important questions I need to ask.  I will post my progress.
