My Journey

Oct 15, 2006

I am 29 years old and at 375lbs. I have been strugling with my weight for 15 years and no diet hase ever worked for me. I am currently in the proccess of pursuing surgery options

4/21/2006 Met with Dr. Brown on Tuesday. Visit lasted about 45 minutes. he was very open and answered all questions. also met with Jodi the nurse manager for the program. As of nowI feel comfrotable with the SJH WLS program.

5/22/2006 ok since last post i have attended another support group meeting. (they are full of info). I also meet with the psych Dr. two weeks ago. Got a call from Jodi at Dr. Browns office and have been mentally cleared. Now i have been scheduled for the remainder of my pro op testing IE: Abdominal ultrasound, Chest X-ray and EKG for June 15th. I will post again when i have more.

6/20/2006 Update since last. I went for all of my pre op testing last thursday. I will i had completed all of the test before the auctual start time. I guess it pays to show up early. I am awaiting a call from the nurse manager for the program to say all went well with the test. I also attended this months support group meeting so all of the required testing and meetings are done. once. I will also have to say my bosses at work now know what i am going to do and they are supportive. (wasnt sure how it was going to sit with them). And my side of the family is for the most part ok with it. well gotta run will update later.

9/25/2006 O.K. It has been forever since my last update. Found out on 9/15/2006 that Dr. Brown will not be doing WLS at SNHMC. I was told that it is not his choice but the upper management at the hospital. So I made some calls and I am now enrolled at Newton Wellsley's program. They will accept my progress so far (yippee) I need to attend a few meetings and have a consult with Dr. Gazmuri on 11/1/2006. Hopefully my January i will be on the other side. It has been a roller coaster so far but hopefully i am getting there.

10/3/2006 Well I attended the WLS information meeting on Thursday and same info as the other 2 i have attended. I called the WLS clinic at NWH and they said they have an opening on 10/4 so I will be going for my consult. I do hace to switch Dr's. Thats fine with me. I will let you know whats going on as soon as I know.

10/18/2006 I HAVE A DATE!!!!! Just reieved a letter from the doctors office stating i have a scheduled surgery for November 28th at 11:30am. Now i am excited and nervous. more to follow...

12/27/2006 Wel It has been awile. Surgery was at 11:30 on Tuesday November 28th.  A little on how my day ment. I checked in at the surgical center around 9:45 and after about a 20 minute wait I was escorted up to pre op. At that point I met with the anastheia doc and she started an I.V. and gave me a little happy medicine to calm me down and of course I was asked to change to a johhny. Spent the next hour or so watching tv and talking to my wife and my friend Darrell. About 11:20 Dr. Partridge came in and went over all the required paperwork of risks of the surgery, and I signed my life away. From that point it gets foggy as I got another shot of happy meds.I barley remember being wheeled to the OR or even moving to the operating table. But i do remember my arms being strapped down and saying to the Doc who was already there to take care of me and thats all I remember.

Post OP- Again certain drugs are GREAT. About all I rember was waking up and lifting up my johnny and seing 6 bandaids and no long scar (YES). Everything was a blur here except the instructions on how to use the PCA. After a few hours here I was cleared for USEN 6. So off I was wheeled. After ariving at my room it was nice to see i did now have to move to another bed as the one you are in from post op to discharge is yours.

The Stay- The nurse was awaiting my arrival in my room and made me feel at ease from the begining. As for the staff up on Usen 6 hats off to all of them. They all work great with larger Patients. So back to my stay. the first night I found myself up untill 1am watching TV. And when i did sleep I was awoken all to often due to the Vitals check every hour but It was ok. The first day went ok no pain to speak of a few hiths of the PCA but not bad at all. I was given clear liquids and barley drank any and i stayed that way for most of the stay. In fact the stay was only 2 nights and I was discharged On thursday night. By the oay the drain that they pull out prior to discharge well i guess that is the only part that sucked. And the Foley Cath.

So the past month has gone by and I have gone a  few rounds with the head hungers and I won. after a week or so I was getting in enough liguids and mush food so i wasnt concerned,. It is funny I have no desire to eat, and when i do it is only a few ounces and I am full. I have not been able to get 60 grams of protein in but after speaking to the MD she said month 1 is hard. I do not regret what I have done I am happy and I thank Dr. Partridge and staff for saving my life. It was unreal to hear I have lost 47 pounds since pro op. and I cant wait to lose more.Anyways it is getting late so I am stopping here untill next month.
