Life is Good!

Oct 14, 2008

I am now, almost 14 weeks out and have lost 77 pounds.  Things are going well, and my Surgeon says I'm right on track.

My Husband has decided to have the surgery and will have his first appt with the Surgeon on 10/31.  He has completed all of the insurance requirements, so I'm thinking, he may be having surgery before the first of the year.  I am nervous for him.  He's never had surgery before, and he's a diabetic, but I know this is the best thing for him, and that, in the end he will be healthier and happier.

God is Good!

What a Ride!

Sep 07, 2008

OK, where do I start?  I haven't posted in over a month, and so much has changed.  I have lost a total of 68 pounds and am down from a size 28 to a size 20 tops, and size 22 pants!  The pain in my knees is completely gone.  I'm amazed that I never have to take pain pills anymore.

I can now:

1.  Cross my legs

2.  Get up off the couch without having to have my 12 year old son give me a hand!

3.  Walk up and down the stairs without being short of breath

4.  Wear my hair longer, because my face is smaller

More to come, as more weight is lost!

I am so grateful for this surgery.   For the first time in my life, I'm looking forward to being around to see my Grandchildren some day.  That would not be possible without this surgery.

Blessings to all,

Vicki

Life Is Good!

Jul 27, 2008

I'm 4 1/2 weeks post-op, and things are really looking up as far as food choices!  Chicken Breast, Lean Pork, Ham, Turkey, and Ground Sirlion are all agreeing with my pouch.  I've started weighing my food, and that helps.  My general rule is to not go over 4 oz. per meal.  I've lost 41 lbs. since surgery, and 53 lbs. all together.  I started at a size 28 - 30, and am now fitting in 22 - 24 depending on the style of pants.  Praise God!  I used to take pain pills every day for Arthritis, but since my surgery, I haven't had to take anything for it.  I no longer have the aches and pains.  The only thing I still struggle with is fatigue.  I am ALWAYS tired!  I did have OPEN RNY, so that may have something to do with it.  The Dr. said it will take up to 6 weeks before I'm feeling 100% again (Gee, I don't think I ever felt 100% BEFORE my surgery)!  Oh well, who's complaining!  God has Blessed me beyond my wildest dreams, and for that I am so grateful!

Blessings to all,

Vicki

Variety is the spice of life (GIVE ME SOME PLEASE!)

Jul 08, 2008

I am so, completely burnt out on the week 2 food choices!  I can't wait to start week 3 on Friday, to start bringing some variety into my life.  Pudding, Yogurt, Mashed Potatoes, Refried Beans, and Soup are all starting to get old, and make me just a little bit cranky!  I pray that I can have a flour tortilla, and toast to make, either a rollup, or a ham sandwich.  I am craving some substance.

Other then that, things are going well.  I'm officailly down 27 pounds since my surgery (6/26/08).  Praise God!

Well, I'm off to bed for the night.  May God Bless you all.

Blessings,

Vicki

10 Days Post-op & Feeling Good!

Jul 05, 2008

Everything went well.  I ended up with an OPEN RNY.  The Dr. found 2 gallstones, they said one of them was the largest they had ever seen (my new claim to fame) so the gallbladder is out!  Everytime I went to the Emergency Room with gallbladder pain they gave me antacid and sent me home.  I knew it must have been gallstones, but what do we know?  We're just the patients, right?

I've dropped 21lbs since I got home from the hospital, and I'm feeling pretty good!  Trying to stay away from the Vicodin, but still need it once a day.

I can't stand the sight or smell of red meat anymore.  Not sure why, it just looks and smells like "dead animal" to me!  I guess that's a good thing.  Have been enjoying, refried beans with 2% cheddar cheese, SF Fudgesicles, mashed potatoes, and Lipton Cream of Chicken soup with crackers.  Looking forward to the 11th when I can add string cheese and toast with cream cheese to my diet.

Blessings to all of you!

Vicki

I HAVE A DATE!

Jun 09, 2008

I'm happy to report that I finally have a date!  June 26th!  I'm looking forward to a new, healthier lifestyle.

Thanks to all who keep us updated on your post-op progress.  I've learned so much from all of you.

God Bless!

Starting to get Excited

Feb 24, 2008

Saw the dietician on Saturday.  Since April will be my last appointment (completing the one year requirement), she moved my appt. up to April 1st, so that I can get the ball rolling for surgery.  She's been Great, and very supportive.

I was reading some of the Hospital reviews for UIC, and they don't look good.  My husband and I have both worked in hospitals, and sometimes I think that makes things worse, because you tend to be less tolerant of substandard care.

My Mom has been very supportive, but now that it's getting close, she is getting nervous.  She is worried that I'm going to die and leave my family behind.  I told her that I believe that our destiny is already planned out by our Savior, and it is in his hands.  I think she understood what I was saying, but as a Mother, it is her job to worry, that's what Mother's do!

I have planned an Easter Brunch for our family this year, since it will be my last Holiday hoorah!  We used to go years ago, when my Sister lived in Illinois.  It was always something we looked forward to.  We haven't done it since my Sister moved to North Carolina (7 years ago), so it will be nice to go again.

Blessings to Nicolle.  Hope to see your first post surgery post soon.

Changes, a part of life

Feb 21, 2008

Wow, it's been awhile since I've posted.  So many changes from my last post......I was given the wrong information regarding requirements for surgery.  Turns out I do have to see a dietician for 1 year first. No problem, I've waited this long!  Now that's it's February, I only have 2 more months with the Dietician before I can move forward.  It went by fast, and I'm starting to get excited/nervous about having the surgery.

My friend has decided against having the surgery.  She's done a lot of soul searching and realized she's just not ready.  I support her in her decision, as this surgery is not something that should be taken lightly.

Since my last post, I have broken my Elbow, gotten cellulitis in my leg, and gained 15 pounds back (LOL).  The cast is now off, the cellulitis is gone, and I've lost 5 of the 15 pounds I gained!  Things are looking up!  Also, My husband has started seeing the dietician, and is considering the surgery also.  He has about 9 months to go on his dietician visits, so I will be the first (the Guinea Pig) LOL

Well, that's it for today!  NICOLLE, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FIRST POST, AFTER SURGERY!  GOD BLESS!  YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS.

Some Good News!

Oct 18, 2007

I got some good news this week!  I spoke with the woman in charge of Bariatrics at the hospital, and she said that I've already had enough appointments with the dietician.  She told me to have my Primary Dr. send a referral to the insurance company, and then we can finally start the next step.  I'm so happy with this news, because I thought I was going to have to see the dietician for another 6 months.  Nobody at my Drs. office knows what the requirements are, so I finally switched to a new Primary Dr. and she gave me the number to the Bariatrics dept. at the hospital, and suggested I call them.  I'm so glad I did.  I am seeing my primary on Monday to tell her what they told me, and have her get a referral out.

As if that wasn't enough of a suprise, I got some more good news this week.  A friend of mine called me (We have not been in touch since early spring) and she told me that she is going to have the WLS also.  She had no idea that I had started the process back in May.  Well, it turns out that she is going to the same dietician (she just had her first appointment), and today she called me and said she is going to be at the same hospital, and is going to the same surgeon I am.  I was so suprised because we both have different insurance's.  The nice thing about it is that she is not afraid to drive into Chicago (I am), so we will be able to do some of this together, and she will drive.  We have Orientation at the Hospital on 11/5, so I'm looking forward to that.  God is so good.  I am so very Blessed to have a friend going through this with me!

I did gain back some weight this week.  I had KFC on Tuesday, and gained 4 pounds.  I haven't walked for 2 days, so I will be back on the Treadmill tonight.  I think all this good news will give me the encouragement I need to get back on track.

Blessings to all of you!

Vicki

It's been a while

Oct 09, 2007

I am on my 6th month with my dietician visits, and things are going well.  I've lost 39 pounds, and am now at 287 lbs.  I had an appointment with my primary Dr. last week and she said that I need to be at least 100 pounds overweight to be approved for the surgery.  On my last visit to the dietician, she said "If you stay the way you are right now, you'll still be eligible for the surgery."  Ok, I have to admit, I hadn't thought about the possibility of losing to much weight in preparation for this surgery.  I did stop taking the ALLI, because of the cost, and the weight loss has slowed down.  I do tend to gain a few pounds on the weekends, but I lose it during the week.  I'm still walking 1 1/2 miles about 3 days a week.  I find that when I don't, everything hurts, but as long as I continue to walk, I feel better.

I do hope that this next 6 months goes by fast.  What I have learned, though, is that, having to see a dietician, and change my eating habits has been a good thing for me.  I have learned so much, and feel that I've made some permanent changes for the better (even though I still crave the occasional Big Mac)!

Blessing to all of you,
Vicki
