Barnes-Jewish Hospital (COE)

"The hospital is horribly understaffed. There aren't enough nurses to care for the patients, so you're left waiting for over twenty minutes for help if you fall or can't move. I had a particularly bad experience with a few nurses, but, generally, even the good ones don't have the time to give you the care you need. They don't have time to bathe you even though they're supposed to, for instance, and if you don't have a family member to stay with you, you're just out of luck. There are no private rooms available, and family members aren't allowed to stay overnight in a shared room. Also, they don't have pads/diapers/undergarments/anything large enough for most bariatric patients. I'm on the "small" end for an obese person, and they could barely accomodate me! Most dangerously, the kitchen doesn't know how to provide the correct diet. They twice sent me meals with sugar or with solid food that I couldn't digest, and, one day, both meals were inedible for me, but the nurses couldn't procure replacements so I had nothing all day but apple juice. DO NOT choose this hospital unless you have an assertive, knowledgeable family member available to spend as much time as possible at your side and advocate for you."

Valerie Halpin

"Dr. Halpin is very gentle, patient, and kind. She looks at you when you're talking, nods to show that she's paying attention, and always addresses your concerns. Her entire practice will be involved in your surgery, and the other three doctors involved in it are also nice. "
