Clearing Hurdles
Mar 27, 2018
Before last week I didn't know which surgery, I would be pursuing... RNY or VSG.
Last week I met with my surgeon. She was patient with me and answered my questions - even the questions that didn't quite matter just yet. She made sure I had a clear understanding of what weight loss surgery was and clarified some things for me that I still needed to understand. I spent the night before re-watching the EMMI videos for both surgeries, so I could be better prepared and even hoped I might come to my own decision. But I was still stuck pretty much with a 50/50.
We talked about the differences between the RNY and VSG and we talked about me specifically and what might be a better option. While she felt comfortable with either surgery for me and said it is ultimately my choice she did recommend RNY.
Although initially I wanted the sleeve because I feel like it is a little less invasive, I've also had a pull toward the RNY for a couple reasons:
1- re: my post in the general forum on OH asking for some advice on which I should choose and the cautions of heartburn being a concern for VSG.
2- considering my starting and current weight --- I was concerned I would not lose enough weight with the sleeve.
3- RNY has been around longer so there is more data available to support long term weight loss.
I know that everyone is so different. Especially since I've been utilizing this website and reading so many people's experiences.
Ok so back to my point - Clearing Hurdles --- I can easily get off track!
Today I'm a little extra encouraged. I was encouraged last week when I met with the surgeon and now have a decision to go forward with RNY and then today I had my follow up for my psych evaluation which I was cleared as a good candidate for surgery.
So now I continue! My surgeon would like to see me lose another 15-20 pounds before surgery. I have lost 25 so far. I feel OK about this.
I'm not sure how many hurdles I've cleared since beginning this journey, but today I feel encouraged and even excited about yet another one. I'm not sure how many more I have to go and I'm not going to make a checklist and start trying to figure it out. One step at a time has been working really well for me.
