Update

Apr 13, 2015

Hello,

I haven't been on here in forever!  I would like to post a current picture of myself.  I have gained 20 lbs back, but am working on taking it off!  I am still so thankful I had surgery and would do it again in a heartbeat!

2 Week Check-Up & Puree's

Aug 27, 2013

Today I went for my 2 week check-up.  Dr. Gerig said I am doing excellent and released me to go back to work tomorrow.  I will be glad to get back to my normal routine and go back to work. The doctor said I have lost 19 pounds since surgery.  So, my ticker reflects my TOTAL loss since I started going to Team Bariatrics in January of 2013.

I also am so happy I saw the dietician and she said I am ready for the pureed food stage.  I never thought I would be so happy to get to the next stage!!  I am so sick of mashed potatoes, oatmeal, chicken soup, etc.  I still am not hungry whatsoever but it is more appealing to have different varieties of items to put in my mouth.  I also explained the issue I have with the thoughts of pureed food.  The dietician said when pureeing say, chicken.  Put a little broth with it to moisturize it, make a couple of tablespoons of mashed potatoes, and think of the meat as "gravy".  I don't know, but I can try this:)

I had my surgery!!

Aug 17, 2013

I went in for surgery on Wednesday, August 14th at 6 AM.  I was nervous, but extremely excited. My husband, son, mother and sister were there during my surgery.

They didn't waste any time at the hospital.  I went in and had people taking care of me from the get go,  They were awesome at the Goshen IU hospital. Patients having the Roux en Y surgery are walked to the surgery room, boy was that interesting!! Anytime I have had a surgery, I was already pretty loopy before going to the surgery room.  This was different.  I had to lay down on a table and outstretch my arms.  Above me were many lights.  It was very interesting.  After I laid down on the surgery table, that's about all I recall.  The next thing I knew I was in my hospital room and the surgeon came and told me I did wonderful.

I was so loopy the whole day of surgery, I do remember the pain, but the hospital was right on top of this continuously monitoring my pain and giving me medications as needed.

The 2nd day- I could really feel the pain, it felt like the pain I had experienced when I had bronchitis.  An extreme pain especially when I moved.  It was a pain just under my ribcage.  This was the worst pain I experienced, I also had lower back pain from sitting and laying in the hospital bed all the time.

I did well walking, the doctor wanted me to walk every 4 hours to prevent blood clots.  I will never forget how kind the staff were at the hospital.  I had a nurse on 3rd shift that was extremely caring named Becky.  I am so thankful for all of them, they were great!!

I did wonder if I was ever going to "pass gas".  This was very important as the surgeon had added gas to my stomach to blow everything up during my surgery.  I finally  did on Friday.   Dr. Gerig came in and told me I could go home and said I was doing perfect:) I am going home to stay with my mother during recuperation time.  She has been so sweet and caring and wanted to do this for me.  I so appreciate it and love her very much for being such a caring mother.

Even though I am still sore, I am so thankful for my decision to go through with this surgery.  I feel like I have been given a gift, It is up to me what I do with this gift:)

It has certainly gotten easier as the time goes on.  I am amazingly not hungry most of the time.

I went to see my surgeon yesterday to talk to him about any last minute questions before my surgery. I am getting very excited and am looking forward to my new life:)

Starting Liquid Diet on July 31

Jul 25, 2013

Hello,

I am starting my liquid diet on July 31. I was not looking forward to it but in our pre-surgery information class they let us taste some of the Nutrimed products to see which ones we liked.  I am happy to say that most of these products were delicious.  Also, our diet is not strictly liquids.

I am not that excited about the protein powders we tried.  I love chocolate and the chocolate tasted very chaulky and nasty.  Any really good protein powders?

Thanks,

Insurance Authorization

Jun 07, 2013

Hello everyone.  I haven't posted for a while.  I am at my 6 month mark.  I had my monthly appointment on Wednesday of this week and the nurse told me that she would submit my case to my insurance company to authorize my surgery.  She told me it could take up to 4 weeks to hear from the insurance company.

On Thursday, May 6 (yesterday) my Bariatric team called to let me know that everything had been sent to the insurance company and she had some great news.  She said they approved it already!!  She said it is rare to get approval so fast!!!  She told me the doctor would call me within a day or 2.  I am very excited!  It really inspires me to read all the experience others have had.

Thanks!

Follow up on Second Appointment

Feb 16, 2013

I went for my second appointment at Team Bariatrics. I have been worried as to what the result will be due to the doctor putting me on Prednisone for pain.  This medication is known for causing weight gain. I stepped on the scale and I have lost 5 lbs.  Yeah!!  I know that is now much, but I haven't been able to lose any for a while.

Next stop-the fitness trainer.  Due to hurting my back and the news i had from my doctor, I was unable to do the exercises he had me doing.   I explained to him all the issues I have been having.  I had an mri done of my cervical spine (my neck).  I have to see a neurosurgeon on Feb. 20.  I am scared to do very much with all of my joint issues.  I have arthritis really bad in my neck and shoulders, both arms, and both knees.  I hope to get some of this resolved.  I hate being in pain all the time.

First Support Group-This group was led by the Fitness trainer I just met with and was about "stretching for mobility".   I definitely was not able to do much of what he wanted us to do, but it was nice being with others who were pre-op and post-op.  I talked to several who shared their stories.  All of them stated they would have the surgery again in a split second.  This was very encouraging.

I have officially given up Diet Pepsi!! I thought it would be so hard, One of my goals when meeting with the dietician was to slow down with drinking pop.  I am so happy, I have actually given it up!!  I am able to sleep better.  I was one that drank pop constantly, I didn't ever drink water or much of any thing else.

Neurosurgeon appointment is this Wednesday.  Oh Boy...

Second Appointment-with nurse, fitness trainer

Feb 12, 2013

Today I am going to my 2nd appt.  I am really anxious to see if I have lost any weight.  I have been doing everything I am supposed to be doing with the exception of the last week and a half I haven't been able to do some of the exercises I am supposed to do due to hurting my back.  I also have other health problems that have been exposed regarding pain in my neck.  I had to get an MRI and now my doctor wants me to come in for an office visit to discuss the possibility of having to go to a Neorosurgeon, so it can't be good news.

First Meeting With Nutritionist

Jan 25, 2013

This morning I had my first appointment with my nutritionist.  She made me feel very comfortable and that she will be supportive during my whole transition.  She explained that she will work with me to learn new habits that I will need to have after my surgery such as losing my diet pop, (which I love), but it is worth giving up if I can be healthier.   She gave me information to read and we made the following goals for the month:

  1. Read "Real Solutions" workbook & complete writings up to page 5
  2. Replace 1 can of soda in the morning with 1-8 oz. glass of water.
  3. When getting soda at a restaurant, order Med. instead of Large.
  4. Have a healthier breakfast that is quick to make 2-3 days per week.

Lots of new things to work on, but I am excited to do this.
