My story is much the same as others I have read here - I have always been heavy. I was the "chubby" child who wore the pretty plus size clothes. I remember getting Gitano jeans to start Junior High school in and they were a size 18. My wedding dress was a size 22. I wear pretty much a size 24 in everything now. My highest weight was this past Thanksgiving (2007) at 310 lbs.

My life up to this point has been a fairly wild roller coaster ride. In 1989 I married my highschool sweetheart - Kevin. Together we had 2 wonderful boys. Our life was everything we had envisioned. But "our" story was cut short by his death at age 33 just 2 days before our 12th wedding anniversary.

Being a single Mother has to be the biggest, most fearsome challenge that I could ever imagine. I'm an only child and my parents were a wonderful support system for me - especially my Dad who stepped in to try and help fill the void in my sons' lives. Sadly he passed away just 3 years after my husband. Less than 2 years later my Mom remarried and moved a short distance away. Needless to say my stress eating and "need" for comfort food has gone unchecked for way to many years. Having been borderline with gestational diabetes during my second pregnancy and my Dad haviing had Type II diabetes put me at risk for the dreaded "D" word.

My family Doc has always told me that Diabetes wasn't a matter of if for me but a matter of when. That when came this past summer (2007). So far I've been able to control it through diet and exercise but I have to be vigilant about it. Bad knees and backs seem to run in my family as well as high blood pressure and cholesterol. If I'm ever going to live my life to my fullest extent then I have to get at it. No more excuses. No more whining - it's time for a little ME time.
