I was what I would consider an average sized/chucky kid till about the age of 14.   I remember age 14 because my best friend had moved back from Edmonton and we were both 5'3' and 130 lbs, it was the start of high school.  By the end of that school year I was 180 lbs.  I then tried We---ht Watchers, doing laps at the school football field, walking 40 minutes to school, anything and everything.  I was able to maintain but not loose weight.  Both my parents were large people and struggled too, and had trouble helping me.  At the time, my dad was the only diabetic in the family so we ate what he ate, just less calories.  I went to dietichian after dietichian to be met with "your lying about what your eating" and other harsh comments.

My family doctor who I adored, I had been with him since 6 months old so he kept thinking I was younger than I was, so he kept saying I was a growing girl and healthy except the weight.  At 25 years of age he was still saying the same thing - your healthy except your weight.

Even after university and college I was still about the same weight.  Even after I moved out and got my own place I still was in the range of 180 lbs.  In 2000 I changed jobs and within the first month of changing jobs I gained 20 lbs, I was eating the same, physical activity was the same, but I realised my commute changed from 10 minutes to 50 minutes.  Luckily this new job had a deal with a gym so I joined and even had a personal trainer for a while.  Again I did not lose any more weight, I did tone quite nicely but saw little sucess on the scale.

I then met the LOVE of my life in August 2002.  He too was a big person, but he had very bad eating habits.  For the first time in eight years I was eating McDonalds again.   He encouraged me to eat right, excercise, he was good that way, but it was nice for us to eat together.  I think by this time I gave up, I was now 240 lbs.  I went up so slowly and gradual I was shocked each time I went to buy clothes and was a different size.

In April 2005 my new doctor (old one retired) suggested WLS - I did not know it existed.  so I thought what harm would the referal be and to investigate the procedure more.  My referal would not be for another year, so I kind of put it aside in my mind.

In June 2005 I turned 30, my love and I discussed how long we would live and we both thought due to our weight and health issues we were middle aged.  It was a horrible thought!! Later that year I noticed the change in my joints, how much harder it was to walk from the bus to work, everything took more and more effort.
It made me seriously look at my mom's health - she is diabetic, liver problems, fibrolymagia, arthritis, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and my dad has a similar list too.

In July 2006 I finally had my first consult with my WLS surgeon. We discussed and the consult was over within 10 minutes.  I looked more into the type of surgery, and was nervous of the numbers given.  But I had another year and a bit to try to lose on my own.

Again I tried to lose weight, hoping I could do it without surgery.  I didn't even lose 5 lbs.

In June 2007 I met with the psycologist and nutristionalist and internal medicine part of the team.  Finally a Nutritionalist that understood I did eat right and tried and nothing worked.  She stressed the chewing techniques so I thought I might as well get use to it - it was hard - but I was eating less, filling up faster - and still didn't loose weight!!!!

My surgery was on 02/15/08 - it was suppose to be 02/22/08 but I was bumped up so one less week of the shakes, which made me happy.

My surgery was sucessful, my surgeon said it was smooth and no issues, which I was happy to hear.

I felt very niaive after my surgery - I thought I had done my research - I fogot to learn about the right after surgery part.

I was luckily enough to meet a WLS patient at the same hospital who was a member of ObestiyHelp, who advised me of it's support system. And I too have told others of it since it is a good place to bounce ideas, thoughts and concerns of others in the same position.

I would also like to thank my family and friends for their support, it made this process much easier.

Wow it's been 7 months since my surgery and I am down 113 lbs. Still hard to believe. I love this surgery, not just for the weight loss, but how it works too.
