So you wanna know my story huh? Well...I suppose it starts back when I was in grade school. That's when I started gaining weight, and it hasn't stopped since. About six years ago, I started looking into getting gastric bypass surgery. Insurance didn't cover it, no exceptions. But I still had hope that someday I'd get past that road block. Well, through all my research, my best friend, Kristin,decided that she was going to have it. Which, don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for her! But do you know how hard it is to want something so badly for yourself, only to watch the person dearest to you get the very thing you want?
Well...fast forward six years. Kristin had her surgery and is doing very well and looks terrific! But recently my life has been pretty rough. In May of 07 my husband lost his job, and our insurance coverage. Then my father died in June of 07. Well, because of his passing, I'll be getting some inheritance. Not a lot mind you...but enough to pay for surgery myself. So it looks like after six very long, unhappy, UNHEALTHY years, I'm finally going to have my chance! It's a shame that it took his passing for me to be able to achieve this goal, but I'm sure he'd be pleased that this is what I've decided to do with the money.
I guess the one thing through all of this that I don't understand is why insurance companies have such a hard time paying for this surgery. I mean, isn't this a prevenative thing? You make me less fat...I cost you less money in the future. Seems to be a no brainer to me. But I guess maybe that's why I don't have my own insurance company. Although if I did.....you better believe that weight loss surgery would be included!
