Revision-band to rny bypass

Sep 25, 2012

Hello all-

I decided to set up and start myself on this site.  I had the lap band placed in July of 2011 and after much struggle and frustration have decided I want to do a revision. My new surgeon agrees it would be a great option for me and stated he never would have recommended the lap band for me. I have had a complete thyroidectomy and have a very slow metabolism.  They feel that the malabsorption will be a great benefit for me.  I have already started the process with a new surgeon who does the revision (my original surgeon only does the lap band).  I have had no issues with the band per se, however; I have not been able to lose more than 30lbs. I have been at the same weight for over 6months now or within a lb or 2. My new surgeon has sent me for all the required tests, labs, EKG, Upper GI and I just and an endoscopy and all looks great.  I'll follow up with my surgeon on Monday and I'm hoping to get a surgery date at that point.  I am a bit nervous about the insurance approval.  My insurance only pre requirements were a BMI of 35 or over with at least 1 co-morbidity or a BMI of 40 or over.  I'm still well within the BMI requirements, I'm just really anxious they won't approve it. They approved my lap band surgery with no issues at all.

I'm hearing different stories about the RNY Bypass and it seems that most if not all lose around 30-40 lbs within the first month or 2. Is this typical? Any problems after revision for anyone? I considered a DS but there are no surgeons in my state that perform this particular surgery.
