I survived!

Oct 07, 2010

Back home. I survivied the RNY.   Surgery wasn't too bad actually.  If you have ever had a c-section you can compare the pain to that. I Walked as much as I could at the hospital to avoid using the breathing machine they want you to breath in.  (Hate that thing from past surgeries). The bed killed my back. It is still hurting. I have always been a side sleeper and it was kinda hard to do that in hospital bed.
The first night you are woken up like every two to three hours for vitals, labs, something.  I even had gal wake me up at 5:30 to know if I wanted to get weighed...ya right!   I was on IV's for first 36 hours, they slowly ween you off.  Had morphine pump for pain, but that made me nauseous, so got off that quickly and discovered I liked Tylenol with codeine! tastes like crap, but back felt better and could sleep comfortably.   They like you to be up walking 4 hours after your surgery, which I did at least 3-4 times a day.  The more you are up, quicker you heal, and sooner you get to go home.  The barium contrast to check to see if my pouch was leaking was not fun. Wasn't hard, just barium stuff made me want to spew. In retrospect, I guess if I had taken small sips instead of one swallow to get it down would have been better.  After cleared that test they had me chew blue ice chips to see if anything came out in my drain, which it didn't. yeah!  After that got to have clear liquids again.  Funny,  1 tray can feed you for hours...... I ordered like Ice tea, broth, and jello. Well, your only supposed to drink 4-6 oz over an hour.  The tea was 8 oz.  Starting to see the dilema? lol   It seems like everything I drink rumbles its way down thru my tummy. Have been trying to take it slowly on drinking to see if that helps.  I am also taking Vit C, D, Iron, Calcium along with Multivitamins, colace, and nexium.   I have chewables but they are huge. I have discovered can take pills (small ones okay'd by doc already) with a little water and do ok, but my tummy gurgles and rumbles for a while after.
I had surgery on Monday 10/04/10 at Noon.  was checked out 10/06/10 by 1:00pm.   Not long stay in hospital, don't regret short stay so far either. Have medical background, so used to watching out for stuff they caution about.

Good luck to every one else!

Day before Surgery

Oct 03, 2010

Well, it is the day before surgery.  My folks are in town from Michigan to help with kiddos.  I have been real excited up until they got here. Then it really hit what I am going to be doing. First time have really cried about it. Nerves are starting to show, expect that is normal for all of us though.  LOL sitting in bathtub poking at my jiggly tummy, wishing it would all go down the drain with the water.
Am reading the book "It aint over till the thin lady sings", which is about gal who is conselor who also has had WLS.  Gives info how to maintain healthy eating and not go back to emotional eating, sliding back into old habits.  Good book to read. Check it out if you can. I have gotten thru half of it so far, hahahaa planned on taking it to hospital with me in morning for some light reading while I am there.
I finally told my little one's that I would be going to hospital for few days and grandpa and grandma would be staying to help take care of them, they were like whatever... guess I didn't compare to Cartoons. Ahh, such is life.   I am on count down.  I know how I want to look in one year, I really hope I can do it. Right now I am just few pounds away from where I was after my last child was born.  Lets see where I will be at 1 month from now.

Liquid diet - Day 10

Sep 30, 2010

Had my education class today.  Funny how they want us to sip water, at least 4-6 oz an hour, but yet once class starts to remain seated till break 2 hours later. Did I mention my bladder is the size of a pea????   Needless to say, I was not sipping the water constantly. On the bright side, they moved my surgery date up to October 4th. Yeah!!!  However, I will now have one less day to make my house spotless before my mom arrives to help out...boooo....  lol

But I can't be too upset. I am happy surgery is coming sooner than I thought.  I have just felt drained these last few days though.  Was in education class today from 8-4. When I got home I literally crawled into bed with a protein shake. That helped. Got to rest my eyes for  few minutes after.  Then back up making dinner for rest of family. My emotions are still shaky.  I still feel like I am crankier than usual.  Making dinner tonight I kept thinking, ok...can have ground beef in 7 weeks... lets see, lettuce in like 6 wks... when can I have a dorito chip? ( we were making taco salad)  Funny, don't recall her mentioning that in class... has cheese, can it be slipped in as a starchy carb?

Liquid Diet - I am surviving!

Sep 27, 2010

Day 8 of liquid diet.  Stepped on scale this morning and down 10.5 pds! what a surprise!  definately worth it to see weight coming off now.  Yesterday I was for the first time really tempted to just eat something, anything, especially the chinese food I made for dinner for the rest of the family.  For some reason the smell of the rice was just getting to me all evening. So glad I did not though after seeing the scale results. Lost first 10 pds. Havent seen this weight for 3 years! Funny how you can define your life moments by what you weighed at the time. When I loose another 10 pds I will be at the weight I was for my last pregancy. Is it weird to be able to define your life by your weight ?

Liquid Diet

Sep 24, 2010

Well, am on day 4 of my liquid diet. They said to prepare for irritability, nausea, diarrhea... yeah.. be prepared.  The first two days weren't so bad. Haven't really been hungry for food, but the smells of food make me crave it.  Like fresh baked soft pretzels from the mall or driving by the steak restaurant...oh my, the smells! ummm...   Day 3 is when my irritability really kicked in. Didn't help my little ones were I swear possessed. I kept finding myself walking to kitchen to try and ease the craving.  Then would drink some broth or water to pass it by.  Didn't realize how much emotions are sated by eating.  Thankfully my husband let me go out at dinner time ( they were having pizza, which I cooked, yummy smelling) . Went shopping and stopped to visit a friend. good to get away from smell of food and cranky kids.  Today, day 4 have been real drained of energy, even though am taking my vitamens and drinking protein.  Drank another shake before bed and it seemed to help with energy a little. My calves are also starting to ache. Usually happens when I am low on potassium.  Poped a potassium pill and hopefully that will help. I don't know about anyone else, but also am peeing like a race horse! LOL   On the bright side I have lost 4.5 pds. in the last 4 days!
