6 months post op

Oct 20, 2010

Well I guess I am not the best blogger in the world and if my life depended on it I would not be here.  LOL   It has been 6 months since my surgery (well it will be 6 months November 4th).  I am so happy with the results and if I didn't loose one more pound I would be happy.  This has been a challenging road for me.  Not only for the weight loss but for my marriage as well.  I have a bi-polar husband who goes off his meds and drinks which always leads to trouble.  He has been back and forth between me an another woman since my surgery so I am dealing with the stress of that.  He recently stopped drinking (court ordered for now) and is back on his meds.  I am currently waiting to see if he will be leaving our house to live with her this Friday.  It is hard to deal with this and friends saying to just dump him because he actually is sick.  But this will be the final chapter of that come Friday.  I will be relieved to say the least.  It has affected our son beyond belief as well.
Enough of that and onto the weight loss.   I have lost a total of 111 pounds and have 36 more to go per the doctor.  Like I said if I don't loose another pound I will be happy but I will be thrilled if I continue to loose.  I have been able to eat just about anything just very small portions.  I am just getting back to being able to eat red meat.  That seems to be the hardest thing to handle.  Not the digestion of it more like the chewing.  If that makes any sense.  I have been eating tons of soup.  I eat soup for breakfast on most days.  I am lucky in that the cafeteria in our work place makes home made soups daily.  I also eat allot of chili (mmm).  I have been trying not to talk too much about my weight loss to people because it tends to get old to them.  But I am so excited.  For exerciser I have been swimming but not as regularly as I should.  I have always had a problem with that because I am basically lazy.  I am also dealing with a heart issue right now that I am waiting for it to be diagnosed.  So that has been hindering me from full out exercise as well.  But all in all the weight loss has been easy for me.  I will try to update this more often with pictures as well.

3 Weeks Post surgery

May 27, 2010

Well I am down 27 pounds since the surgery 3 weeks ago.  I am very happy with the results.  I have been having some horrible back pain since last Thursday and do not know what it is from.  It seems that when my stomach tightens up so does my back. It is so bad that I actually gasp in pain.  I am going to the Dr today for my 3 week check up.  I have been able to eat normal foods with lots of chewing however after I eat I feel like I'm going to burst and I am not even eating allot.  I am trying to get all of my fluids and proteins but some days I just don't.  Today I will also meet with the dietitian as well so I am hoping she can give me some ideas.
I am also meeting my mentor in a few minutes.  She had the surgery some time ago and we have so much in common.  She is going to give me some samples of some protein powders that have no flavor and are really good. I am looking forward to that since I can no longer stomach the vanilla and chocolate ones.  I found one at GNC that is a fruit flavor that I have been drinking with water and it is pretty good and refreshing.  I will give an update after my DR appointment.  Thanks for reading.

2 Weeks Post Surgery

May 17, 2010

Well things are getting better.  I went to the Dr 1 week out and they stated I was doing great.  I have had some extreme pain on my left side. The Dr stated it was from the nerve damage and will get better as time goes on.  I am not able to bend down to the left side but can now pick things up off the ground if I lift my left leg up, back and bend from the waist.  I have lost a total of 14 pounds since the surgery.  I am eating a variety of foods but making sure they are pureed or chewed very well.  I went for a walk today (2miles) before I drank my protein drink.  When I got back I was very tired and felt a little light headed. I need to make sure I eat or drink before I walk.  I am thrilled with the effects so far.  I need to keep going on my walking I want to walk 4 miles today and going forward adding each few days.

Post Surgery 1 week

May 10, 2010

Well surgery was one week ago. I have to say I was surprised by the amount of pain from the gas used to increase the stomach during surgery.  I had one incident post surgery evening where it was determined that I either threw a clot or had a minor heart attack.  Other than that it went well.  I had surgery on Tuesday May 4th and left the hospital Thursday May 6th.  The weekend at home was tough but OK.  I was more worried about keeping hydrated than eating any type of food.  When I left the hospital I was on pureed foods. I did eat some eggs on Saturday and some pees Saturday night.  Other than that I have been trying to keep up on the protein mix.  There is so much to remember but I am sure it will be great.  I have a mentor assigened by the hospital who Will be visiting this week.  I'm looking forward to that because she is very much like me.  As for weight loss I gained 10 pounds in the hospital which I did not like but it was from the fluids.  It is slowly going down this week.  I will try to keep this updated. There are so many things going on in my life including my husband leaving me for a younger (thinner) woman.  It has been very emotionally draining but I will not fail and I will keep going.

1 Week until surgery

Apr 27, 2010

Well I am one week away and lots has changed.  I went to my pre-surgery class with 4 other people also having surgery and we talked about what to expect. There were some really good questions and you could tell everyone was very nervous.  We all got a bottle of soap to shower with the night before and the morning of surgery.  We got a book and a binder full of information.  There is no special diet except for the day before surgery.  Normal light breakfast and clear liquids up to midnight. Then nothing after that, not even water.  I need to be there at 6am to have a DVT filter put in place then the surgery is at 10:30 am.  I am the second surgery for the day for my surgeon.  I should be up into my room by 3 pm at the latest. My friend Kelly is spending the night Monday and taking me to the hospital and will be reading books and waiting for me.  Everyone should have a Kelly friend.  After the surgery I will be on clear liquids for 3 days. When I leave the hospital I will be on pureed foods for 3 weeks.  I will also need to supplement my diet with protein drinks for up to 5 years.  I am so excited I cannot even tell you.  I went shopping for some after surgery meals.  I bought baby food which was kind of cool.  I have not been down that isle for 12 years.  LOL  I always loved the veggies and fruits.  I bought some jello, soup and broth as well.  I should be set.  My son is going to stay at a school friends house for the week and probably weekend.  That friends mom is a nurse so she will be checking in on me for the week.  Everything is falling into place.  More after the date!!!

April 5th

Apr 05, 2010

Well I received my approval letter today in the mail.  It looks like I am all set for my surgery date.  I just need to get the CPAP machine and make some test appointments for the surgery.  I'm looking forward to having some time off of work.

Well Happy DAY!!!  I had my appointment on the 25th as scheduled and was told we could schedule my surgery.  That date is May 4th.  I still have to wait for approval from the insurance company but that should be no problem. I am so excited and nervous at the same time.  My husband is preparing to be with me in the hospital and within 2 weeks we will be headed to San Antonio to attend the graduation of my son to the Airborne Division of the Air Force.  My son has asked his step dad (my husband) to pin his wings on him at the ceremony.  I am so proud and can not wait for both days.
I am still waiting for my CPAP machine which for some reason is taking forever.  It is just crazy!!!!!! More updates to come.

Well swimming is going very well.  I have gotten up to 80 laps in an hour.  It was really tough in the beginning but now I have a good pace going.  I'm trying not to stop until I have complete 10 laps.  I have a cold now so it is harder to swim the full 80 in an hour.  My goal was to hit 100 this week but I am thinking maybe by Easter.  I have my apt on Thursday the 25th, still hoping that the surgery will be scheduled and sometime in April.  My last sleep study went well.  I was fitted for a CPAP machine and air flow. WOW was that ever crazy.  I am hoping to get that all settled within the month.  More later.

Well I started swimming 3 times a week.  I am currently up to 66 laps in an hour.  Not the best but for now it is all I can do.  I am able to swim 8 laps without stopping. That is great since the first day I swam I could only swim 1 lap and had to stop.  I feel better about myself because this will make me more healthy.  I'm waiting for another sleep study so I can finally get some good sleep.  I have spoken to some people who have the cpap machine and they say the very first night it was so different.  Looking forward to it for sure.  Then on the 25th I have my 6th appointment with my surgeon.  He stated that I could then have my surgery scheduled.  Mr Dr will be on vacation the week after Easter so he will not schedule the surgery the week prior to his vacation. So I am looking at a date of April 12th ish.  I'm very nervous but so looking forward to it.

Well I finally had my sleep study.  Come to find out that I have server sleep apnea.  WHOOO!! It is great knowing what my problem is when I wake up exhausted.  I'm going today to meet with the DR and then make an appointment to get fitted for a CPAP machine.  Not sure how this will affect the love life.  LOL
As far as weight loss goes last month was awful.  I gained 3 pounds. This was due to the fact that I was traveling for 3 weeks of February.  I tried to eat well but it gets very difficult while out and about.  I also started a membership at the Y.  I am going to start swimming today and try to do it at least 3 days a week.  I am hoping this will speed up my weight loss before the surgery.  I will be able to submit the surgery request after the 25th of March.  My Dr is on vacation over Easter break so I would be able to have the surgery at the earliest April 12th.  This will work out great because I can have off the last two weeks in April and all of May.  I will keep this updated as much as possible.
