I'm about 50 and my BMI is about 47 and I am about to have RNY surgery. I am so thankful that the surgery has become a reality for me. Weighing 315 was never what I wanted. I don't mind being fat but I do mind the co morbidities. I've got sleep apnea, GERD, borderline diabetic, high blood pressure and all my joints ache, especially my knees. I get winded walking out to my car after work.
I never really thought bariatric surgery was for me. It seemed to me a sort of self-mutilation to fit into society's stereotypes (especially about the size of women). But then I started on my way up to such a high weight and my body was less and less able to function. Now I understand that for many of us, WLS is a GOOD option to take back control of our lives. I feel very happpy and satisfied about my decision.
My goals are to be able to walk without pain, go on vacations and visit museums without being in a wheelchair, make movement and exercize a part of my life and feel full when I'm full. I want to live my life as a partner to my wonderful husband not as a burden to him.
