6-month update

Jan 07, 2007

My surgery was 6 months ago yesterday, and I couldn't be more pleased with how things have gone.  I have had nearly no ill-effects from the surgery, and I have lost 100 pounds since my highest weight (80 since surgery).  I feel great, and people tell me all the time how great I look - this is weird :-)  I shop in stores that have a women's section on one side and a regular section on the other side.  It was great to make a tentative venture to the "regular" side and pick up some clothes without trying them on.  I have not been this size since I was in college (many years ago!).

Other exciting moments have included:

1.  Trying on my wedding gown (it's too big now :-)
2.  Wearing my wedding rings (3 weeks post-op - had not worn them in over 10 years)
3.  Seeing family and friends I have not seen in a while and having them tear up when they look at me and say I'm beautiful :-)
4.  Seeing a picture of myself and not realizing how small I look
5.  Picking up blue jeans -- without an elastic waist -- off the rack, without trying them on, and feeling totally comfortable in them.  Jeans are some of my favorite things to wear now, and I never wore them before.

Dr. Bour and his office have been nothing but great!  I attribute a lot of my success to their support.  He is wonderful; just strict enough as needed but totally encouraging at the same time!

Plans for the next couple of months are:

1.  Watch my water intake (dehydration can be a problem for me)
2.  Keep taking fiber supplements (for other problems LOL)
3.  Get 4-5 meals in
4.  Join a real gym
5.  Go to support group every week
6.  Buy more clothes!!!

7/9/06

7/9/06 - I am home from the hospital today. I was supposed to be home yesterday, but I was running a fever, and they thought it best for me to stay an extra night. The morphine really knocked me out, so I was unable to walk and do the breathing exercises during the first day. Once they stopped the morphine drip and went to morphine pump only, I did much better.

I am feeling pretty well. I ran a slight fever this afternoon, but once I took the pain meds I was prescribed, it took care of the fever. Sometimes it is a struggle to know whether my current discomfort is caused by taking in too much fluid, gas, or pain from the procedure. Dr. Bour told me today that, based on the area of the discomfort, it is likely pain from the procedure. I was a little afraid of drinking too much too fast and was probably taking in a little less than I should have, but that is going better now as well, especially since I know it is from the pain and not from a full stomach or from gas. It is going to be a struggle to fit in all the pills I need to take and get the protein and enough fluid in. I hope to make myself a little chart to help me keep track of where I stand during the day. There is so much to remember, I don't want to forget to do something important!

Hubby and I took the dogs for a walk this evening. The scenery beat the hospital corridors LOL. I may go to work for a few hours tomorrow once I see how I feel. Overall, I am pleased at how well I am feeling just 3 days post op. Dr. Bour said things will change at the one week mark, so I'm waiting for my 1 week appointment to find out what changes there will be...........All will pass eventually!
