AM I ABOUT TO MAKE A BIG MISTAKE?

Jun 01, 2009

It's 7:45 am and I have been up since 3:15 am.  Yesterday I woke up at 1:00 am.  Why?  Because I can't sleep.  I'm a nervous wreck.  I actually feel like I have overloaded on caffeine, I'm so jittery, except I haven't had any caffeine!  I'm supposed to be on the liquid diet with a lean cuisine for dinner.  I can't even eat or drink!  I have never been so upset that I can't eat, usually just the opposite.  I'm so nauseaus, at first I thought it was the protein I was drinking, but it's all the time.    I know it's normal to get nervous, but I'm wondering if this is a sign that I'm making a mistake?  I mean really, who elects to have their insides cut and rearranged?  If I can't handle the way I feel BEFORE surgery, what will happen after surgery?  I am really depressed about this.  I have researched WLS for years.  I've come on this website everyday for six months.  I really thought I was prepared, but now that surgery is one week away, I am freaking out!  If any of you felt any of this, please share your experiences with me so I don't feel like I'm going crazy or making a huge mistake.

Now that the excitement has worn off.......

May 17, 2009

fear is starting to set in.  What if something goes wrong?  What if I don't lose much weight?  What if I go through all of this and still have sleep apnea and high blood pressure?  What if I'm nauseaous all the time?   What if I'm one of those people that develops problems from surgery 10 years down the road?   I have researched wls for  years.  I don't DOUBT that I am making the right decision, but I do FEAR that I might  be one of those people that has problems.  I know I'm supposed to get in all my water  and protein.  I know I'm supposed to walk as much as possible after surgery.  I plan to keep excercising  and I will follow everything my Dr. and Nut. have told me to do.  I will be vigilant about taking my vitamins and getting regular labs.  I'm going to try  my best to attend support groups, but it is very difficult for me to get to them because I have four children and because of the hours that my husband works.  Am I missing anything?  Besides getting my house/affairs in order before surgery, what else can I do to prepare myself for the biggest change of my life?  Thank God for all of you here on OH.  Coming here daily and reading about all aspects of WLS has been invaluable to me.  You have all been a tremendous resource and support to me.  Especially you Anita R. , thanks so much for putting up with all my questions and fears!  So if anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate hearing it.  Thanks again OH family, you're the best!

Roux and Y, Vertical Sleeve or Lap Band - so confused!

May 01, 2009

I have already been approved for RnY with Dr. Pohl.  I have an appt. with him on May 8th and I should get my surgery date then.  Recently I have been second guessing if I am choosing the right surgery.  I did not learn of the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy until I joined this site.  The more I read about it, the more I became interested in it.  I live in RI and there are NO surgeons around here that perform the VSG.  I did a search on the VSG forum and found doctors that were listed as doing the VSG in Boston and RI.  I called all of them and none of them do it.  The only one that had some experience with it was Dr. Sax in RI.  I made an appt. with him and saw him this morning.

Let me just say that when I first saw Dr. Pohl back in January, I had basically no knowledge of weight loss surgeries.  I had not done any research and did not have any questions prepared to ask him.  There were so many questions I thought of in the following months.  I wrote them all down and brought them with me today to the appt. with Dr. Sax.  He started out by telling me that weight loss with the VSG is only about 55% of the extra weight, 50% with the LapBand and 70% with the Roux and Y.    He said with the VSG, the pouch is larger (long and narrow) than the RnY pouch and that contributes to less weight loss.  He has only performed it on patients with bmi's of 60 or more.  He also said it would be impossible to get insurance to cover it.  I know he's been doing RnY for years but when I asked him how many VSG's  he has done, he said TEN!  He used to practice in NY and did some DS surgeries there.  As I was sitting with him I realized right then that the Sleeve is not going to be an option for me.  I'm disappointed, to me it seems like a great alternative to RnY.   Then I proceeded to ask him my questions.  The questions pertained to any WLS but a lot of them were about complications  from RnY.  Since I have only one kidney and also have Cardiomyopathy, I am very concerned about being able to absorb medications I may need in the future.  After I asked him a few questions, he said, "Look, you're obviously very anxious about this, so I would recommend the LAP BAND for you."  I really don't feel I was acting "anxious".  I feel this surgery is a major life decision and I should research everything I possibly can.  I told him that I was not interested in the LAP BAND and continued with my questions.  About 4 questions later (I had 20) he stopped me again and said "With you being so anxious about this, I would really recommend the LAP BAND.  You won't have to worry about most of these things you're asking me if you have the band."  Now I'm sooooo confused.  Dr. Pohl's recommendation was for me to have RnY.  He said with the co-morbitities that I have, RnY would be a better surgery for me.  Today I'm told I should have the LAP BAND.  I really don't want the Band, but now I'm doubting my decision.  Both doctors have good reputations here in RI.  My PCP spoke very highly of Dr. Sax.  I'm even confused as to which surgeon I should use.  I started with Dr. Pohl.  At my first appt. I was scheduled at 1:30 but wasn't seen until 3:45.  I hope that's not the norm there.  Today I waited about 5 minutes.  Dr. Sax's office also has a Nutritionist in the office.  ( I don't know if that matters as long as I have a Nut.)

Okay, I've rambled on enough here.  I have an appt. next week (5/8) with Dr. Pohl.  I'm just so confused about what I should do.  I'm usually not indecisive like this!

Just received a call from United Health....

Apr 13, 2009

and they informed me that I was approved for surgery!  Oh my god, this is really happening!  Next step; Dr. Pohl will review my file and his office will call me to schedule an appointment.  At this appointment they will tell me when my surgery date is.  I have no idea how long this will take.  I'm guessing somewhere between 1 -2 months.  I can physically feel the fear right now.  Maybe because I just found out.  I have to calm down..........

Waiting for Insurance approval....

Mar 22, 2009

This week I completed the last two appointments that are required by my surgeon.  Last Tuesday I saw my NUT.  She gave me all the info for my post-op diet and told me she would send her letter clearing me for surgery to my dr.  Last Wednesday I saw my PCP and reviewed  everything with him.  He actually started writing my letter of approval to send to my dr. on his computer while I was in his office.  I asked him if he would fax it instead of mailing it so I could get this ball rolling.  Tomorrow I will call my surgeon's office and see if they have everything they need, which they should.  Then the waiting begins!  I hope my insurance company approves me quickly.  I can't wait to begin this journey.
