My surgical experience....

Jun 17, 2010

On Monday, June 7th my mother, my best-friend and I made an early start for the hospital. Since we got there so early I was the first one wisked away and made ready for surgery. After talking with the doctor I last remember giving my mother a kiss and rolling out of the room. I woke up several hours later feeling relatively good, all things considered. Things seemed to be progressing as expected and late Tuesday afternoon (June 8th) I was discharged. And then....

Once I was home I was in so much pain that I felt like there was something wrong. Despite being sent home with perfectly good pain medicine and anti-nausia medicine I was just out of control. Some time after mid-night I started throwing up. After several hours of this I called my best-friend and it was off to the ER (Wed June 9th). I ended up having a swallow test and then was taken straight back to the OR. This time to spend even more time under. After going back over all of the incisions and connections the surgeon was never able to find anything wrong. As a course of precaution they placed an NG tube.

I spent the next 5 days in the GIGU floor trying to get myself back together. The NG tube was finally removed on the morning of Monday, June 14th. And I was able to go home on Tuesday, June 15th. Since then I have been improving every day. I have found that adapting to my new life has been significantly more challenging than I prepared myself for.
