Grocery Store Tour

Aug 26, 2014

I went on my grocery store tour yesterday.  Our local store has a dietitian on staff and she spent 2.5 hours going through every aisle teaching me about reading labels and comparing foods.  I brought my information package from the bariatric clinic and she was able to give me lots of food ideas that met the guidelines.  Some of the most helpful things were comparing bread products and finding a decent cereal for busy mornings :)

She also gave me a handout which basically turned the Canada food guide into visual plate breakdowns - e.g. a breakfast plate with mostly protein, some grain and some fruit.  It's something I can post on the fridge so when I'm trying to make a meal I can see what the proportions should be.

The best part about this resource is that it is free and she said I can come back any time!!  She also asked me to come back and meet with her if I get a surgery date so I can review the fluid/soft food phases.  I would definitely recommend something like this if you are looking for help reading labels or having a shopping strategy.
