My story...hm. Well, I've been overweight probably since I've been 12 years old, and I am now 25. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18, and for two years I kept up with *treating* the symptoms. Since I did not have health insurance it got too expensive, and I stopped following up. Weight kept piling on throughout the years, I tried several different diets, and lost 30lbs in a year on weight watchers, then gained it back and then some. My highest weight was 301lbs but maintained around 286lbs for several years. My cousin had RNY back in 2007, and I said to myself back when she got it done that I would never do that. She was successful with it, but I did not think it was for me.
I finally got a job with health insurance and the first thing I did was see a new PCP and he ran all kinds of lab work. I have high chlorestoral, mild sleep apnea, and I am a pre-diabetic, along with PCOS. A year before getting a job I had contemplated lap-band after my aunt had it. But again I wasn't sure I wanted weight loss surgery. I then signed up at the gym, and with a personal trainer. I worked out 3-4x a week and see a personal trainer twice a week. I was losing some inches, but not much weight at all. He personalized several different diets for me, and I lost 25lbs in 6 months while working out so hard, and did everything I should. It was discouraging. Then I started work and had no time to go to the gym at first, and that's when I made the appointment with my surgeon.
It didn't take me very long to get all the testing done because all the doctors I needed to see, worked at the doctors office I work at. My appointment with the surgeon was on January 26, 2011 weighing in at 284lbs - my initial consult with him was for lap-band. I also asked him some questions about RNY but I had my mind set on lap-band. When I left the office, I was 99% sure at that time now I wanted to do the RNY. It will benefit me more. My surgery is set for 4/12/2011.
