Happy Christmas

Dec 24, 2013

To those who celebrate, I wish you a Merry Christmas!

I am dong well post-op.  I have lost 30 pounds since my surgery (4 weeks post).  I have not had any major complications.  Constipation and being light headed when I stand up it about the hardest part.  I am walking almost 10,000 steps a day.

I start back to work next week from home, and then on 1/6/2014 I start my 90 min commute back into downtown Washington DC.

10 Days Post Op

Nov 28, 2013

I am 10 days post op and things are going very well.  I am almost pain free and I am losing nicely.    The surgery has not complications and I was out of the hospital in 2 days.

My new pouch is treating me well.  Food and water are sitting nicely.

I am eating out 600 calories a day and I am having a hard time reaching my 90 grams of protein.   I will keep working at it.

I am also increasing my walking.  Today I went for 2 walks; one 2-mile walk and then a 1-mile walk in the afternoon.   I try to get over 5000 steps a day.  Next week I will be pushing for 7000 a day.

Oct 21, 2013

This morning I had my upper gi endoscopy the procedure was quick and painless.  They did find one polyp.  They are going to test it to see they need to remove it.  I hope this doesn't delay my surgery.

Upper GI Endoscopy

Oct 20, 2013

Things are moving along nicely at this time.  I had some bumps with my psychological billing but that has been cleared up.  My psychological evaluation is over and I was cleared.  I have one more nutritionist appointment before my case is sent to my insurance for approval.

My Upper GI Endoscopy is tomorrow on 10/21 at 7:30 am and my pre-surgery approval from my Family Doctor and EKG is on 10/23 also.

I have cut my calories in half; my target is 1,700 a day.  I also have added 45 to 60 minutes of exercise 5 to 6 times a week.  I have lost about 50 lbs since starting on 8/1 about three months ago.

Now that it is fall, my husband and I have been doing 6 to 8 miles hikes a day on the weekend.

2nd Psychological evaluation

Aug 31, 2013

On 8/30 I had my second Psychological evaluation appointments. On this visit I had to take a set of cognitive skills test and then answer about 600 true/false questions.

That day of I found out that my insurance would only cover 3 of the 5 hours of testing.  The testing rate was 180, so I had to shell out about $400 for my second visit.  I wasn’t too happy about that but there was not much I could do about it.  I have BCBS PPO plan.  I wish I was on the HMO plan and the payout would be lower.

Still a few more test to go and three for Nutrition appointments.   My surgery date is set for Nov 28 if all goes right.

Psychological evaluation

Aug 14, 2013

Today I had my Psychological Evaluation.  The evaluation is in two parts a) today was the in person interview.  She asked about my past growing up.  Ask about any traumatic events in the past and any problems with drugs and alcohol.  Over all it was a smooth process and only took about 90 mins.

Part B is the  Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory test.  The test is used by trained professionals to assist in identifying personality structure and psychopathology.  The MMPI has been considered the gold standard in personality testing ever since its inception as an adult measure of psychopathology and personality structure in 1939.  I will be taking this test in about 2 weeks.

Nutrition Counseling Visit 1

Jul 31, 2013

Today was my first visit with the nutritionist.  She works for NuWeights and is at Dr. Anez’s office every Thursday.  The visit went very well.  Today we talked about my history and current eating habits.   I read this somewhere and it really drove home what these next three months will be.  Pre-Op you work on HOW you eat and Post-Op you work on what you eat.

I have three behavioral changes to work on for the next few weeks.

1)    Chew food well (applesauce consistency)

2)    Eat slower. Meals should be 30 mins not 10.  (put fork down in between bites)

3)    Increase activity 3 30mins walks per week.

I am a very fast eater.  I eat a lot and I eat it fast.  So the first 2 changes will be a big change for me.  Today I had two meals that seem like they took forever to eat.  Some other changes my husband and me are making:  No more eating in front of the TV and no liquids 30 mins before or after and eating off salad plates.

My next visit Aug 22.

First Visit with Surgeon

Jul 23, 2013

After the weight loss seminar I thought about all the different options.  I started with the Lab Band, but now was looking at the sleeve Gastrectomy or the Gastric bypass option.  I like not having the side effects of the Gastric Bypass but I didn't think it will give me the long term results I am looking for.

Today I meet with Dr. Anez to go over right options for me.  After talking with him and said that the Gastric Bypass would give me he best weight loss and would be better for me long term.  I meet with the rest of his staff and started the process of all the tests and procedures
