3 months out and vomiting

Oct 06, 2009

I went to the surgeon for my 10 week check up and expressed my difficulties in keeping food and liquids down.  He said since I wasn't dehydrated that something must be getting through my system, but obviously not enough.
I have never felt the "Sanity" feeling those with VSG surgery get from eating a small amount of food.  I eat and throw up and eat some more because I'm still hungry.
Dr. Heydari (my surgeon) said he needed me to do an Upper GI so he can watch the barium flow through my system and see where the problem is.
So the following Monday I went in for the Upper GI, just imagine swallowing barium when you can barely keep water down...UGH!  The radiologist thinned out the barium and I didn't have to swallow as much as the usually make you swallow.  The radiologist could see a very narrow spot in my esophagus where fluid was passing but extremely slow.
After reviewing the Upper GI results Dr. Heydari scheduled me for an Endoscopy. The endoscopy was last Friday and afterwards Dr. Heydari said that he pulled out 2 Tylenol from that narrow spot in my Esophagus and there was a tremendous amount of inflammation in that area so he didn't want to go further down, plus he need a smalled scope that he didn't have at the time to get into the lower part of my stomach.  So a second endoscopy was in order but he wanted me to have a couple days of clear liquids and liquid Carafate for the inflammation.
Yesterday (Tuesday) was my second Endoscopy.  Dr. Heydari was able to get into my stomach with the scope and he found yet another very narrow area which he dilated.  He told me that only 1% of people get this complication and of course I was one of them.  I will need another gastrectomy to remove that piece of the stomach that is very narrow.  With the VSG surgery he removed 90% of my stomach already so after this I really won't have much left.
He said to report to him tomorrow and let him know how liquids are getting through.  Well, I already know that liquids are still coming up, I had a half cup of chicken Broth and only half of it stayed down.
What a nightmare this has become but hopefully after the second surgery I will finally be on the road to recovery once again.
I leave on Friday for Washingon DC to help my son move back to school in Delaware (He is in his senior year at University of Delaware) and he just spent the past 2 months serving an internship working on Capitol Hill for Congresswoman Melissa Bean.  I'm spending a week with my son, so any surgery will have to be after I get back...which means I'm gonna have to deal with this problem away from home and put off the surgery for a week or maybe 2 depending on when they can get me in.
I just keep telling myself to remain strong, although it is very difficult.
