The Hospital Experience

Sep 09, 2007

It must have been about 4:30 am by the time my cell phone went off. "REACH OUT AND TOUCH FAITH!" a popular ringtone, you might know the band...Depeche Mode or something ;) Personal Jesus. I felt that song was appropriate for the day that was about to happen...as to why i set it as my alarm clock.I got up, went straight to the shower and gave my self a good scrub down. Broke out the Hibicleanse scrub that they give you at the preop class because its supposed to be cleansing and its an antiseptic. Went back to my room and put on a nice fresh pair of clothes and came out into the living room to find my grandmother and mother looking so nervous and yet happy for me.  We all piled into my mom's car and started out for Sharp Memorial Hospital.  We made it there in less than half an hour i think 25 minutes to be exact ...My Mother drives like a mad woman especially when there is somewhere she needs to be. haha. We waited for Matt my boyfriend to catch up with us because he went a different way due to anxiety issues he has about the freeway. AND THEN I CHECKED IN! heh. Got to this room where they told me to change into a gown and socks and then i was told to lay in this gurny, little did i come to realize that i would be doing nothing but this for the next 2 days haha. A nurse came in and took my vitals (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate) and then she left. Another nurse came in and hooked me into and iv. I kinda scared her with a little hospital humor while she was doing it LOL. She went to put in the needle and i said "OUCH!" "JUST KIDDING!" hahah. She liked that. After that i waited for about 10 mins with my family and then, they said "We're ready for you we're gonna wheel you down and you'll talk to the anesthesiologist".

They wheeled me down along with my family to what i would later refer to as the crazy room.  It was the recovery room and i met a really rad nurse there who surfs and she made me feel really comfortable. She said "you shouldnt do this, you know why? because i want to! so we should trade places" hehe.  And she was telling me how great this surgery is and how much it has changed peoples life.  It made me feel really good.  Great bedside manner.  I then met my surgery nurse melinda. And i met the anesthesiologist though i don't remember his name so we'll just call him my drug dealer for giggles.  Then Dr. Mueller came over and asked if i had any questions or if my family had any questions and was talking to me about how everything is going to happen and such.  And then melinda came back and said "okay we're ready!"  I said goodbye to my mom, i almost cried heh. Me and my mom have always tended to be emotional when it comes to these sort of things.  She said she almost cried too, but didnt want to in front of me because she didnt want me to know how scared she was before going into surgery.  I hugged and kissed her and my grandma.  And then i gave a huge kiss to matt...AND THEN THEY WHEELED ME BACK!

It was so cold in the OR room.  They transfered me over to the actual surgery table and they had me spread my arms out as if i were jesus on the cross LOL.  I remember they put sticky things all over my chest and shoulders for monitoring my heart and then my drug dealer gave me drugs. I closed my eyes and remember thinking to myself "THIS IS IT, GOODNIGHT!" and thats all she wrote.......

I woke up later back in the recovery room.  I opened my eyes and people were saying "HI MICHELLE! You did a great job, you're in recovery right now" I could barely open my eyes, i felt so sleepy. I smiled at the people and then dozed back off.  I woke up again and coughed and coughed "GREAT MICHELLE! keep coughing! they put lots of air in your stomach for the surgery so that is what you need to cough out.  I said nothing, i could barely talk, and i was wanting to doze back off again.  It was the weirdest feeling.  I would doze off, wake up coughing and come back awake and repeat the process for a good hour and a half.  I remember waking up a couple of times and hearing other patients who were getting out of surgery and they were all making weird noises like they were in sooo much pain and i thought to myself "DID I DO THAT TOO?!?!" i think i would have remembered that haha.  So it was about 2 hours once i had gotten to recovery that they finally got me a room and wheeled me up to the 7th floor.  As soon as i got to the room, i passed out again. I awoke to my mom and grandma and matt smiling at me and saying "HIIIIIIIII! Dr. Mueller said you did a great job and you sailed right through it, he also said your anatomy is perfect and that you're gonna do great" GOOD TO KNOW THAT I HAVE GREAT ANATOMY haha.

Soon after my mom and grandma got there they left , matt stayed with me.  He actually stayed with me the whole time until i got discharged from the hospital which was a good 2 days and 5 hours. Bless HIM.  Over the next 2 days i would lay in my gurny.  Every 12 hours a new nurse would come in and check my vitals and check my incisions(which i really didnt see until i got home) and they would come into my room about every 2 hours (unless i buzzed them) and they did a pretty good job, i think i had more morphine than  a junkie has ever had. The Morphine made me even more sleepier.  I think by wednesday i was over the whole hospital thing. I wanted to go home and lay in my bed and the leg compression things were annoying to me and i wanted to get up like every 10 mins.  The IV that they had me on would make me want to go to the bathroom every 2 hours. I became a pro at unhooking my iv and my leg compressions and wheeling myself to the bathroom. I remember thing DAMN why did they have to take the catheter out?! haha.  Wednesday night i was running a temp. and having high blood pressure (NOT GOOD) and they kept saying if you dont get this down you're not going to end up going home tomorrow. THAT PISSED ME OFF.  Thursday morning, my blood pressure was fine. And My temperature was fine.  Juna, Dr. Muellers RN from his staff came in to check on me because he couldnt get to me. She said "how you feeling" and i said "GREAT! I WANNA GO HOME!" she asked if i had any pain or if i had gas.  No pain, but lots of gas. And then she asked if i had gas-x and i said yes of course and she said "ALRIGHT LETS GET YOU HOME" ...awww man....MUSIC TO MY EARS. I got up and the nurse came in and took my IV'S out and my pain pump in my abdomen.  I changed into my own clothes and it felt SOOOOO good. And then they discharged me and i was a free woman :)

Matt took me home and as soon as we got there we both conked out in my bed, which was SOOOOO much more comfortable than the hospital of course. Ahhhhh. And i have been home ever since still recovering :)

The End

  • -Insurance card and living will or health care proxy, medication list

  • -Pictures of family or loved ones…This is an optional item

Its interesting the things people say to you...

Aug 08, 2007

Its interesting the things people say to you when they find out you are going to have gastric bypass surgery.  I have been telling a lot more people about it now. Before i had only told my close friends, family, boyfriend about my choice.  I actually hadn't planned on telling many more people until someone (whoever that person might be) decided to tell EVERYONE at a recent bbq, that i was getting weight loss surgery.

Now some people who i had only the pleasure of talking about lame stuff (for example, beer pong and video games) were coming up to me and talking about my deeeeep dark feelings about my weight.  And how they were so happy that i was doing something about it...

Some people came up to me and said congratulations...which was nice.

When i was in the store the other day i ran into an old acquaintance of mine whom i told about my upcoming surgery...which in return she told me "AWESOME NOW WE CAN GO CLUBBING!" ....ummmm....what was wrong with me before? that i couldn't go clubbing with her? i happen to know that i am an AWESOME dancer.  I have a few extra pounds than some of those other chicks but hell i can shake it better than most of them.  Was she too embarrassed to be seen with me? what, was i ruining her chance of "getting with some hottie's" ? EFF THAT.

I also had some girls saying, "wow now you can get some really cute clothes" .....ummmmmmm....HELLO?! i happen to think that i dress kind of cute.  Im fashionable, i can find some cute things... why to i have to be SMALL to find CUTE clothes?! i mean damn, i wear some cute little skull hoodies and cute dickies pants and converse...i'm cute! ....and for them to say that now that i will be smaller i can get "CUTE" clothes...EFF THAT.

I also ran into a girl i used to work with from Costco. Her reaction was ..."I'M SURPRISED YOU'RE DOING THAT".....WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?!? .......i really don't know how to take that...is that like....good? as in i don't look THAT heavy that i should be getting it? or is that bad as in she is surprised that i would resort to surgery for weight loss....UGHHHHH

Now that i think about it, people don't say interesting things to me...they say MORONIC things to me.

I have been chewing my food slowly down to a puree consistancy, and i must say...im getting full faster just doing that. I have cut out all caffeine and have started drinking mucho water.

I got a voicemail yesterday from sarah saying she made my appointments for PCP and a Psych Eval for the 17th of this month so that is good.
