I've been considering weight loss surgery for years. My first attempt to have the surgery was in 2012. I was still in college, working varying shifts at a grocery store (and the job itself was horrible) and I was severely depressed. My nutritionists never thought I was ready even though I was certain I was. Looking back, I am so grateful that they never let me go further. In July 2016, my primary doctor suggested I should look into weight loss surgery. At the time I had given up considering it again because I didn't think I'd ever be ready. I decided to go to an informational session, just to see how I felt and I made the choice to try again. At that point in my life, I was a year into remission from depression and I was very stable with my psychiatric medications. I also worked at a job that I loved, I had finally graduated college 6 months before and I was just in a much better place in my life. I had my VSG surgery on February 20, 2017. On the day of surgery I weighed 293 pounds, which was 107 pounds lost from my highest weight (400 in 2014). My realistic goal is to get to 180, but I'll have to see how things go the next few months before I decide if I want to amend that goal to something lower.
