my goal

May 15, 2008

I forgot to mention that last night when I was looking at my OH profile, I realized that my goal was to have a surgery date by my 30th birthday. well, yesterday was my 30th and I was disappointed that I hadn't reached my goal, but I guess one day late isn't too bad.

a surgery date!!!

May 15, 2008

so today out of the blue, my surgeon's office called and asked if I'd like to go ahead and  schedule my surgery date!!!  Would I ever! Like she even had to ask. So the soonest possible is June 10th, which is less than a month away so I'm happy. I gotta start my high protein diet and get all of my protein shakes. Oh happy day!

Well, i found out i have an ulcer so my surgeon wants to wait til the first part of june to do another endoscopy to see if the ulcer is healing.  so i've cut out all caffeine and am trying to eat the right foods and stay away from the bad ones.

I hadn't heard anything from my insurance co. so i called today and I have in fact been approved for surgery so now I 'm just waiting til june to see how my ulcer is.

the bad news is though, that I might not get my surgery soon. I have tricare and my husband is a reservist so we only get insurance when he's mobilized. he's been mobilized for the last two years, but silly me just now started the process to get gastric bypass. well, he's scheduled to come off active duty in august so that means no more insurance for us, and no surgery for me. so, I'm desperately hoping i get my surgery next month, that my ulcer has miraculously healed and everything is a go. so, waiting is all i can do for now. and try not to get too down about it.

Last week I had my psych eval...I guess it went well. It took me over 2 hours to get there and then I had to wait for about 45 minutes for the psychiatrist.  So I was a little unnerved to start with. He said he should have my file all evaluated by this Monday. If everything is a go, I won't hear anything from him, he'll just send his recommendation to my surgeon. So, I'm hoping not to hear anything from him.

Yesterday I had my initial meeting with my surgeon. The hospital is 3 hours away and after the long drive, had to wait 2 and a half hours to see him. I was starting to get antsy and my husband was getting pissy. Just as I was starting to play with the stethoscope, he walked in. He seems really nice. He answered my questions and was supportive of my decision for gastric bypass vs. lap band.  The EKG tech said that he does more surgeries than the other surgeons.  That's a plus.  I couldn't schedule my other appointments or get answers about my insurance, though, because the lady that does that stuff was out and will be out until wednesday. I guess I'll just have to bide my time and be patient.

Excited

So last week I had my WLS seminar in Birmingham, a 2 and a half hour drive from Phenix City. I didn't really learn anything. Since my sister has had the surgery, I think I'm pretty educated on the procedure (Lap RnY). I'm not saying I know everything, obviously I don't, but I was a little disappointed in the seminar, especially since it took so long to get there.  Those long drives to Birmingham should prove that I'm dedicated and determined to get this surgery. I see my surgeon for the first time on April 7th and the office estimates a surgery date of 6-8 weeks from the first consultation. I hope it's sooner than that.  I'm excited about the consultation, though.  I don't have to do the 6 month diet so all I need is the psych eval, which is scheduled for the 28th of march, a visit to the pulmonologist, which is scheduled for April 15th, bloodwork, and nutrition class. I hope it goes by fast.
