Surgery is over and it's been a challenge

Jun 19, 2008

It's been one week since my open RNY surgery at Munroe Regional.  I was the first surgery of the day which made my day since there was not too much time for the anxiety to set in.  Surgery went well and the dr. offer for me to go home the next day if I wanted to.  I did opt to stay an extra night.  Recovery had been going well until today.  I had a coughing spell and must have pulled something.

I have had my fill of proteins shakes and pureered soups.  Hopefully after next week I'll be ready to add to my menu.

It been on week today and I have lost a total of 14 lbs. since surgery.  I try update my weight lost progress once a month as I know it can be motivating to see when going through the same journey or starting the journey.

I Cant' Wait!!

May 26, 2008

Happy Memorial Day to all those who have served this country.  I salute you all for a job well done.

I have approximately 18 days to go before I start my journey.  I am excited however I am beginning to feel a bit of anxiety.  Reading the blogs of other who have already started their journey helps by giving me information on what to expect pre and post surgery.  I think I'll start to sample the protein drinks next week so that hopefully I'll find one that is pleasing to me prior to by surgery.

I know I am probably wrong, but I have not told my adult children that I am having open RNY.  They think I am having another lap band implanted.  If you read my blog I had a lap band in 2003 and it worked wonders however I became will (due to no fault of the band or doctor) and had to have it removed just shy of one year later.  It's now 2008 and I have regained all that I lost and
decided to go with the RNY.  My oldest daughter is fearful that I may have complications.  Unfortunately their dad passed away in early 2003 and they are afraid of losing me as well.  I pray that I am doing the right thing by not telling them.  If you read by blog your opinions would be welcomed.

I am in a new relationship now and recently became engaged.  My new husband to be is not so keen on the surgery however he understands why I want and need to lose weight to improve my health.  I have faith that God will guide my doctor's hands and bless me with a safe and successful surgery.

I've Been Approved

May 08, 2008

I am so excited - I have been approved and have received a surgery date of June 12th.  I do have to admit, I am a little apprehensive, but I have faith in God that all will go well with me and guide my surgeon during my procedure.  I have to admit the whole process was not as big as I thought.  Insurance approval went smoothly.  Thank you Cigna!!  I guess the next time I post will be with an update after my surgery.  OH members please keep me in your prayers.

Happy Birthday to Me!!

May 03, 2008

Hello all - it's been a while since I last posted, but things are going great.  My doctor's office has submitted my paperwork to Cigna for review.  If all goes well I'll soon be on my way to a healthier life.  Yesterday was my birthday so I took the day off from work, slept late, had a shopping trip to my favorite store, Macy's and had dinner with my sweetie at The Cheesecake Factory - ate low cal/low fat of course!!  But the best present of all - my man proposed marriage and of course I said YES.  I am so fortunate to have found such as wonderful man.  We have been dating for almost 4 years so I guess it was time and I was so ready.
Hopefully by my next post I'll have my answer from Cigna.  If it''s God's will it will be.

Three Down & Three to GO

Mar 19, 2008

I have complete the required psych eval, nutrition class, cardiac eval, throid panel so all that's left is 3 more months of my doctor supervised diet.  I hate to say this after my last month's post but I am having such a difficult time trying to stay motivated to diet.  I guess if I was able to stick wth a diet plan I wouldn't be trying to turn to surgery to help me lose weight.  I find that I am an emotional eater.  Had a rough day at work yesterday and what did I do?  I treated myself to all those things that I love, carrot cake, bread & butter, mixed nuts.  Why!  I always wind up feeling guilty after these binges.  It will definitely be a battle the next 3 months but I will not give up the fight!!  I did this virtual model so that I see what I actually look like. I hate looking in mirrors these days especially a side view.  You know when you pass by a building with windows, I refuse to look at myself because I have gain so much weight since I had my lap band removed.  It was my crutch and I loved my band but it didn't love me!!  This is me now, but hopefully not for long.

It's Febuary - 2 months down, 4 months to go

Feb 16, 2008

I had my second visit to my doctor for my monthly supervised diet checkup.  I am not proud to say this, but I am down 1 lb and had to take off my boots to do that!  I really didn't try very hard this month, but after having my appt. with a dietitian and learned how important it is to lose at least 10% to reduce the chance of having a fatty liver I decided that I might not make the 10%, but I will try harder to get as close as possible to that amount.  I was surprised to learn that the liver sits in front of the stomach and the doctor has to manuver (sp?) around the liver to get  to the stomach!  It well worth the $90 to spent the time with the dietitian.  I learned quite a bit..  I have also had my psych eval which went well - just a little anxiety, but that won't stand in the way of having the surgery.  In today's world there aren't many who can say the are free of anxiety.

I have decided to try to hit the gym or at least be a little more actve. I have a treadmill that has been collecting dust maybe it's time to put it into use now.  I am hoping that by building up my stamina will help me achive a speedy recovery after surgery.

On with my challenge - month #3 here I come!!

New Year, New Insurance, New Requirements

Jan 18, 2008

It's been a while since by last visited here.  The new year brings new insurance which means new qualification requirements.  My insurance switched to Cigna from United Health Care so now I need to do the six month diet and have a psychological exam as well.   The news of the added requirements was a little upsetting at first, but I feel the 6 month diet will really give me the chance to try changing my way of eating, I just hope that losing weight does not hamper by chances of having surgery.   I have been on many diets and have lost the same pounds over and over again,  but the pounds always return.  I am hoping that with a change in the way I feel about food, along with the surgery, I can finally achieve the ultimate goal of having a healthier life on a permanent basis.

An early Happy New Year to everyone.

My quest for a revision is temporary on hold.  My insurance is changing eff. 1/1/08 so even though I had all my paperwork done and ready to submit to insurance I asked by doctor's office to wait until the new year.  I was really hoping to avoid this, but thing usually happen for the best.  My new plan will be Cigna.   I'll post again when I have a definite date - wish me luck.

Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas.

Just a little about myself.  I am 57 years old, widowed, 4 loving, grown children and 2 sweet as sugar grandsons.  I live in sunny Florida and I am loving life.

I have spent countless hours contemplating once again undergoing surgery to conquer the obesity beast.  I have obtained an abundance of informaiton regarding procedures, physcians, insurance so I I though I should share my journey as well.  Maybe it will be helpful to someone else.

Approximately 4 years ago I decided that the lap band was the way to go.  Things went well and I managed to lose weight (I started out at 245 and in less than a year I was down to 165), quite a success for a bander.  Unfortunately I became ill and my band slipped.  It took doctors about a week to find out what the problem was, but I should have returned to my original surgeon because he probaby could have known what my problem was immediately.   After a weeks hospital stay I came one weighting 145.  To make a long story short, my band was removed.  The first couple of years I was able to keep my weight within an acceptable range until I had to going on prenesone for an illness.  I was heart broken because I know what this medication can do, but if my life depends on me taking this medication, I can't challenge the doctor's recommendation.

Now my weight is up to 239 +/- a few pounds and all the medical issues that come with being overweight have now resurfaced.  So it's back to Dr. Overcash, but this time I am planning gastric bypass.  My paperwork has been submitted, now it's up to the insurance company.

Please wish me luck gettng approved and pray that if approved I will be blessed with an uneventful surgery.

God bless you all.
