Time to Update

May 01, 2010

Had a few setbacks lately - got really sick and way behind on my protein, meds and liquids. I'm finally back on track but seems like I'm starting all over again. Fortunately since our pouch is a tool I can put my tool to work for me again. I wish I understood more of how our body works after RNY because as sick as I was, not eating, drinking and spending a lot of time in the bathroom, why a person doesn't lose weight anyway. However it seems the only way to lose is to use the combination of protein and fluids working together to make our tool work for us. I'm off my stall, finally hit a great WOW moment by losing over 100 lbs., 104 to be exact. I'm definitely on my way to onewonderland just a little slower than I would like. However, since I didn't put all this weight on overnight and since I'm changing my eating habits to incorporate these habits into the rest of my healthy life, I am learning patience. There is nothing wrong with slow and steady weight loss. As long as I stay with the program the weight will eventually come off. I've made great progress and with the continued support from my OH family and my home family I will succeed!!  Thank you everyone for your encouragement, tongue lashings and recipe's. The online support here is fantastic.

hugs to all

Msnewme's WLS travels

Feb 15, 2010

Hello everyone!! I'm a 60 year old grandma wanting to get thin enough to run around and play with my grandkids. I've been overweight all my life and it's a shame it took me till the age of 60 to make up my mind. (hopefully before it's too late)

I've been married 41 years to the same old man - who supports me completely in my journey to a healthier life. I had three sons but lost my oldest son this passed June 14, 2009 to a heart attack.  He was only 39 years old. I had already started my WLS journey by then but the loss of my son strengthened my resolve to see this through. I still have two wonderful sons, one is a Marine who has had 3 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. He is the baby of the family and the only one married. My middle son is also wonderful. He is in the legal field and works for a oil company. I have two grandbabies, Morgan 3, and Cooper 1 1/2 years old. They are the most adorable babes but then every grandma says that about their grandkids. I guess you could say I am very proud of my sons and grandkids.

My Story:

My journey to WLS surgery started in April of 2009. My wonderful insurance company wanted six months with a Nutritionist before surgery so I complied. After the required time my wonderful, fantastic, Dr. Garth Davis, performed my surgery on Dec. 7th 2009. Which happened to be the same day my youngest son returned from Afghanistan. So it was a double wonderful day. I had no trouble with the surgery, recovery time was great and I don't regret the decision at all. In fact, it is the best decision I have ever made for my health.

To be honest, I've had good and bad days along the way. I have never been fond of the name Gertrude - (nothing against anyone named Gertrude) so I named my pouch Gertrude. I have days she is finicky, stubborn and down right disagreeable. So everyday is a surprise but I wouldn't trade this journey for anything. I hate exercising, always have, but I'm learning to live with it.   I have another job and that takes most of my time. I am the caregiver for my 94 year old mother-in-law. She fell a couple of years ago while trying to clean her gutters with a broom stick!!  The end result of that catastrophe was eleven fractures of her pelvic bone and the fact that she could no longer live alone. Since I don't have a lot of respect for some of the local retirement homes around town I decided to keep her at home and take care of her. I thought I was doing something nice for her but we couldn't get her to move into our home. She wanted to stay in her own home. Soooooooo, we moved into her home, sold ours, and I became a full time caregiver.

Well now you know all about me and my life. I will keep you all posted as to my progress on my WLS journey as I reach my mini goals. My first mini goal was reached last week when I finally went below 250 lbs. My next mini goal is onederland. So watch out 199 here I come.
