Beware of Sugar addictions!

Dec 12, 2012

First of all, what's new with me:

- Had half my thyroid removed due to big growing benign nodule

- Working on a masters degree

- New boyfriend (of a year and a half now) who is at least three things my ex was not: Educated (masters degree) Employed (Analyst) and good in bed ;) Thank you newfound self confidence!

- Awesome friends who took over after leaving my ex of 6.5 years and losing most of our mutual friends

- I can still wear my new boyfriend's pants, lol

- uhhhh... I just made some tasty low carb chocolate cookies....

So... anyhow, about the sugar thing....  I was at 155 for a looong time after my surgery, always hovering around there, sometimes less sometimes more. I wasn't really trying to lose weight anymore but was doing fine maintaining with little effort. Then I got into a habit of eating mints. First it was a sugar free type of mint, but that messed with my digestion because of the xylitol, so I switched to Altoids, and boy did I love them. I was eating them like candy, (thank you very much oral fixation!) and over about 6 months or so of that I gained 10 lbs. At 165 I figured I better do something about it, so I researched the ketogenic diet. Simply put it requires you eat ~20g a day or less of carbs, and get about 60% of your daily calories from fat. (Similar to Atkins in the low carb thing, but lower and no emphasis on protein) The focus is to not let your blood sugar spike and keep your cells in a state of ketosis so they can release fat.

You are still supposed to watch your calories, but honestly with surgery and this diet combined I don't have to worry too much about that. It's very filling! It has finally gotten me to see my carb addiction as it is, and how I need to avoid sweets and breads. I quickly lost the 10 lbs I had put on with sugar and now I'm 151.5, heading towards my original RNY goal of 135 lbs... and potentially under! Yaayyy!

I highly recommend a ketogenic diet to any WLS patients wanting to lose their last bit of weight, or just wanting to finally rid themselves of a bad-for-you carb addiction. www.reddit.com/r/keto is a great place for resources and support.
