Like so many I have been over weight most of my life.  It started around 3rd grade and through my school years I continued to gain weight.  I think back at some of the terrible things I went through as a fat kid, the insults, always being picked last for sports, not fitting into the new trend of clothes, and my worst having to take swim classes!  I know so many went through the same and similar stuff, it's a wonder we are sane at all.
I spent most of my schools years overweight.  My first major weight loss was between Jr and Senior year of High School.  Basically did my own diet and took off almost 100lbs.  I felt great and kept it off for awhile.  I struggled in college but get it down.
After graduating from college and starting work it became harder and harder to keep the weight off.  I would go up then loose some and go back up again.  I usally would find a middle ground and stay there for a bit, unitl the cycle started again.  Most of my adult life has been like that.  I went in stages of gaining, loosing, and then finding a midlle ground.  190 then to 210, then to 240, then 260...always struggling.  Last year I topped at an all time high of just under 300.   At that point I started getting side effects of the weight, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,  ect.   I managed to take off some of the weight (with the help of the new diabetes meds that made me sick to my stomach) but after awhile felt myself slipping again.  I knew I had to do something.
I had heard about WLS for years but wasn't sure I wanted to do something so extreme.  It was mentioned by a doctor a few years ago, but at the time I wasn't ready for it.  Since then I have had talks with my doctors about it.  After getting the diabetes and really starting to feel the weight (knee and back pains) I knew I had to make a decission once and for all.  I did a lot of reseach online, talked to some friends and co-workers who had the surgery and watched every tv special on TLC and DHC I could find.
In April I went to a seminar given by Dr Phol and Dr Giovanni at Roger Williams Hospital.  The feeling I had that night is hard to explain.  It was like a light was shinning down and I could finally see clearly.  I knew after that night this is what I need to do.
And so I am on my path....have done the pre-ops and waiting now for my insurance to approve.  Then I'll be on my way to a healthier me!
