The Staples Come Out!

Jan 04, 2007

Two weeks after my operation I went to my PCP to have my staples removed.  I had laparoscopic RNY surgery so I had five ports with three staples in each.  This was more uncomfortable then a lot of the things I had been through previous.  I was happy when they were all out!

My doctor weighed me and I had lost 40 pounds!!  YES 40 in a month.  That is almost unbelievable to me.  I knew that clothes were fitting better but I couldn't believe how much I had lost.  I was happy that I had jump started my surgery with a really good weight loss plan.  It was something I could do but only for a month or so.

So back to work shortly.  I am really looking forward to getting back to work but also a little nervous that I will be able to make it through the day!

The Beginning!

Jan 04, 2007

My journey started about four years ago when I went to my PCP to see about WLS.  He had never referred anyone for WLS before but was more than happy to do this for me.  He sent the referral away (there is no one in my province that does WLS).  I got approved and had an appointment a year later.  This doctor then retired and I was back on the drawing board.  My doctor didn't know anyone else who did WLS.  I brought in a list for him and he referred me to some.  It was one heart break after another.  Four years later....... I found a surgeon in Montreal who does WLS and you can pay to have the surgery done.  I sent my application in on October 31st and on November 27th I was there for pre-op consultations.  It was an extremely long day.  I had to see the nut, exercise phys, phys a few times, surgeon, a PCP there; the list went on and on and on.  But.... I was approved!

I had a date set for December 20th.  I couldn't believe that it was so soon.  I was so excited but had several things to do in the short time.

I traveled to Montreal on December 19th.  My mom and I managed to do a lot of shopping before the next morning when I had to be at the clinic at 6:30.  I was feeling great and ready for my new life.  I was not nervous at all which I knew then it was the right decision for me.  I went into surgery at 7am.  The worst part was the freezing of my mouth so they could intabate me while I was still awake.  I don't remember it but I do remember how bad the freezing was.  When I woke up I was very uncomfortable.  All I wanted to do was to get out of bed.  They wouldn't let me.  They kept telling me I had to wait until after supper.  When that came I was up and around the clinic.  I was so tired of lying in bed.  I sat up for an hour or so.  It felt great.  I then would sleep for a bit and then get up again.  I think all the walking really did help in my recovery.

I traveled back home on Christmas Eve.  I managed to have a little Christmas with my family but was very tired from the flying and driving.

I am so happy my new life has begun!
