Wasn't too carb/alcohol hungover from last night festivities.... managed to get up on time to do my first volunteering of 2014 at the refreshments group before the race, which means I only have to volunteer 4 more times this year to get another personalized bib. I'm way too thrilled about that little perk! Picked up my first bib and I got the number I picked (#79) and wore it for the run. Saw a lot of my former coaches and ran with 2 guys from my pace group. I think I should run with guys if I want to race and stick to running with girls for long runs when I want to socialize.... The guys push me to run fast in shorter distances but I have so much more of a pleasant experience on long runs or LSD pace with girls!

What a difference a year makes!

Just got home from the club's annual Turkey Burnoff and hit a PR! My Garmin said I did it in 1:35:49, though the official results aren't yet posted. I ran with a buddy from last season who's WAY faster than me. What's funny is that he wouldn't have done the full 10 miles if I wasn't there and I wouldn't have been so fast if he weren't there! It's such an awesome club..... My first race with MCRRC was the Turkey Burnoff last year and I'd only done the 5 mile portion, not the full ten. Well, off to finish laundry & get ready for work (ugh!).
ETA: official time was 1:35:57!
A new PR and races past....

Ran another 5k and surprisingly really did hit a PR! I couldn't believe it, as my last 5k PR was in the AIDSwalk 5k on a pancake-flat course in DC and this one was a very hilly night-time race. Guess I really have gotten speedier!!

So, my official chip time is a new PR of 27:23! My time at AIDSwalk 5k in 2012 was 27:44, so I've shaved a good 20 seconds off my time over the span of a year.
In an even more reflective moment, I've actually done a lot of really good & fun training over the past year. Some big races (um, like a full marathon!) and some shorter but still fun club races. I've volunteered for enough races to qualify for a personal bib for next season with MCRRC and am just in awe of how much time I've spent training and how much progress I've made in such a short time! I can remember my first run on a treadmill where I hit a 5k in 38:44 (or something) and felt like I was putting it all out on that rubberized belt, and 3 training programs later, I've run faster & farther than I could have imagined..... I've met some awesome running buddies, raised money for CCFA, and been inspired by awesome coaches. I really do love this sport and look forward to races to come!

Shocked beyond belief that I got 7 hours of sleep, I haven't injured myself during taper and I actually feel more happy than nervous! Breakfast will be several cups of coffee/tea (cuz I plan on hitting the starting line with an empty colon!!), 2 Power Crunch bars, and a protein shake. That oughta be enough carbs & protein to get me started. I have a package of GU chomps to eat during the run, and they'll have a Sport Beans aid stop near the Mall, so something familiar. The first aid stop is going to be fresh oranges. Cool idea, but in practice it'll be a mile of sticky feet.... yuck! Um, and the final food stop is Dunkin Donuts munchkins. I'm hoping that at mile 22 I still have enough sense in my brain to realize that would be a BAD idea to shove in my mouth....
Not loving the fact that my face has decided to break out in some painful & ugly zits. Gonna make those MarathonFotos not so pretty. I wonder if I can keep concealer on for 26.2 miles.....
Mantra for the next few hours; "trust your training!"

OMG. OMG. OMG...... Every emotion possible has run thru my brain. Like this is how I felt prepping for my half-marathon but even worse....
And I've eaten more carbs in the past 2 days than I ever expected to... Having to come to terms with the fact that extra 200-400 cals each day isn't gonna kill me but hitting the wall at mile 22 will SUUUUUUCK!!!
So bring on the carbs... Granted, healthy ones, like veggies, oatmeal, fruit, etc. Off to our pasta party tonight, then expo tomorrow, and the big show on Sunday! Can't freaking wait!!!!!
Look for me in bib 17004 at MCM. Success will be defined as NOT being picked up by the DNF van, but secretly I hope for finishing around 4:45something....
T-minus 6 days....
Oct 21, 2013
Oddly calm. Like, somewhere in my brain there's a disconnect that I'm running a full marathon in 6 days. OK, so I know I'm well trained and if I can run 20.73 miles (longest I'd done to date), I can run the whole 26.2...... I think maybe running the Army Ten Miler was a good thing b/c its course was a highlight reel of next Sunday. I think it may have mentally prepared me for what's to come. I've got most of my outfit laid out, most of my day-of bag packed, and I've only gotta buy a throw-away hoodie to keep me warm before the race, but everything else is set! Wow.... nearly 6 months of training in the past, only 6 more days to go.....
Emotional rollercoaster
Oct 16, 2013
And, no, it's not due to hormonal dumping from rapid weight loss! I was in hysterics last night because there was news that the Marine Corps Marathon might be canceled due to the government shutdown. I mean, sobbing. Like a couple doses of sedatives to be able to go to sleep.... So after a lot of rational people talking me down to logic and a good night's sleep, it's looking like fates have turned and the gov't may reopen soon. Fingers crossed that the votes go the way of starting life back up and this stress was just a colossal karmic test of nerves....
So how'd that strategy work for ya, tea party? A lot of human suffering for pointless posturing. Schmucks.
