6 Months Post-Op

Feb 12, 2012

I keep meaning to post another blog update on here.  Well, here it goes!  I was officially 6 months post-op at the end of January, and had lost 140 pounds at that time.  My 6 month post-op appointment with my bariatric center went great and they were very happy with my progress so far.  My BMI on that day was 31...I started out at 53 point something.  They told me they usually don't see a BMI of 31 from most of their patients until they're about a year post-op, which made me feel really proud of how hard I've worked.

Things are going well!  I am loving my exercise.  I usually do Zumba 4 days per week, I take a circuit training class on Saturdays, and I usually get a few runs in every week.  I exercise 6 days per week...Mondays are my rest days.  I've come to really love the routine...and the great thing is that I've been in this routine for so long that it no longer feels difficult to get myself to exercise every day.  I look forward to it!  I love setting fitness oriented goals for myself and working hard to achieve them.  The goals I'm working on right now are my first 5k on March 4th, followed by 2 more 5ks (with more after that, I'm sure), completing my Zumba instructor course, which I'll be taking mid-March, and a half marathon in October!  I'm also entertaining the idea of getting certified as a lifeguard - it's something I did when I was young and would love to do again, if only as a fitness goal.  I would also like to look into dance classes for next fall.  If I can start teaching Zumba classes, I figure I could do that 3 days per week and then take a dance class for myself (I'm thinking hip hop, jazz, or contemporary) on the 4th day.  It would be so much fun to dance like that again!

At any rate, things definitely have slowed down in the weight-loss department.  I'm still losing, just at a slower rate...around 2 pounds per week.  That's fine with me!  I figure I've got about 40 pounds or so to go.  I hope to be there by July!

I've been tracking everything I eat online at myfitnesspal.com for about a month now.  I usually end up eating around 800 to 900 calories per day.  I have no trouble getting all my protein and water in.  I'm starting to see that I need to keep an eye on my "mind hunger", because I've found myself having the urge to eat when I know I'm not hungry more than a few times.  I'm trying to teach myself to do other things when that happens...so, so SOOOOO important for me to learn this now, I know.

I will say that I am learning to really enjoy food now.  Before, I honestly hated food.  But now I really enjoy the food that I eat.  I enjoy it because it really does taste great to me, and I know it's so healthy!  I love my Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, veggies, tuna, egg white omelets, and salads.  Oh, and I absolutely love to use 1 tablespoon of dry roasted edemame as a replacement for croutons on my salad!  It's perfect!  You must try it!

Well, anyway, it's been a great six months.  I am so grateful for my tool.  I am going to work hard at using it for the rest of my life!
