My First Post

Apr 16, 2010

I guess I'm quite a bit late in becoming involved in this portion of OH. Up until now I've only been reading the articles featured on the main page and the Q&A forum from time to time instead of meeting and chatting with fellow support group members that takes place monthly and other lap band patients

I'm only four days away from my scheduled surgery date with Dr Beth Ryder at Rhode Island Hospital. I've elected to have a Realize Band installed and I'm pretty excited about it. This long weekend (Patriots day '10) I'll be shopping for the necessary post-op provisions that will be needed for the next few weeks.

My wife had an RNY bypass performed during the summer of '06. Although I watched her discomfort over the period of several weeks and her adjustment to a new way of eating, it was clearly worth it for the overall improvement in the quality of her life. She seems much happier at her present weight and all of her earlier weight-related health issues have either disappeared or are easier to manage.

I've chosen the Realize Band over the RNY bypass due to its less invasive procedure and hopefully shorter recovery time. The ability to periodically adjust the band fluid fill over time as needed also made it an attractive option. I tend to be a bulk eater at one sitting (although I snack every chance I get as well) and feel that if I have that "tool" that flips the switch that says that I'm full, I'll be on my way to permanent weight-loss.

Years ago I bought a great exercise piece from Big Fitness in Pawtucket. It's a power rack with a plate-loaded weight carriage with a pulley system incorporated for both vertical lat pulldown and horizontal seated row type exercises. It came with an adjustable bench that has a leg curl/extension attachment, which I'm not crazy about, but it's better than getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick. I already had plenty of Olympic weight with bars and dumbbells for free weight exercises from my pump-monkey days. We have a nice treadmill with a TV, VCR and plenty of unwatched movies set in front of it, so no excuses from me for not getting any exercise!
