I am just over 3 months out of surgery (surgery date was 8/28/2006) and I am doing very well.  The surgery was very difficult (especially since I had never had major surgery before).  I had the open RNY banded surgery and my surgeon, who just retired, was Dr. Alen Newhoff from Arizona Bariatrics.  He and his partner are wonderful doctors and I would highly recommend them.  The first 6 -8 weeks are the hardest.  It was an impossible thing to get through my head that I could not eat.  Liquid diet pretty much.  Physically I was doing very well.  I lost 19 lbs in the first week!  Mentally I began to question if I had done the right thing because it was so difficult for me to adjust to the changes.  I kept listening to my doctor and others that had been through it and somehow it just slowly got better and better.  I know for sure that if I had not had the surgery that I would not be able to report on any diet a 60+ lb weight loss.  I would have certainly continued to gain weight. 3 months out I have to say that it was the best decision I could have made.  I have a long way to go still but I am on the right path to a long healthy life. Anyone that is considering this surgery I would suggest that you are sure that you are up for the challenges and great rewards that come with this major life change.  It is not easy by any means, but it was the right choice for me and it is worth it.
