Hi Everyone. My name is P.J. I'm 38, married, and have 2 young daughters. I'm having RNY surgery because I want to make sure I'm around for a long time for my wife and my girls, and I want to be there for the important milestone moments in my daughters' lives. My weight has been a struggle my whole life, ever since I was a kid. I would have periods when I would diet and work out a lot and get in pretty good shape, but these would be followed by periods of weight gain, each time hitting a higher ceiling. I would lose 60 pounds and keep it off for a year or two, but then eventually gain 80. The last time I was at my true goal weight was 12 years ago. Since then, I've gained and gained and gained, going over 300 for the first time in my life a few years ago. I managed to get down to 245 using the Atkins diet, but was not able to get any lower than that, and wasn't able to sustain it for long. It also didn't take me long to gain all the weight back and then some. By earlier this year I was at my highest weight ever, 324 lbs. A mentor at work who I look up to and admire and respect greatly confided in me late last year that he was having bariatric surgery (VSG), and that he was concerned for me, and that he thought I should look into it and consider it, and that he'd be happy to answer any questions I had. Others had discussed it with me before, but I guess hearing it from him may have been the final push I needed. Well, that and my youngest daughter being born last October. I began doing my research shortly thereafter, and met with my surgeon for the first time just after the first of the year. Now here we are, it's Memorial Day weekend, and my surgery is this week. I'm already down to 299lbs as I prepare for surgery, and I'm looking forward to my new, post-surgical life.
