My story begins back in August of 2006 when my sister and I went to a seminar for Gastric Bypass surgery.  We both were excited at the possibility of having it done and starting new lives.  I got the approval from the insurance in October of 2006 and had surgery scheduled in for mid October.  After having DVT's 4 years ago the surgeon wanted to get the approval of my GP before doing surgery.  She said I was ok, but only if I had Greenfield filters put in.  So my surgery was postponed for a week.  Then not having the time to find a surgeon to do it I decided to have bloodwork done instead (another option my GP gave me).  Well, it took 3 weeks to get those back and not a few days so surgery was again postponed, but this time with no date.  It turned out that I do carry 2 genes that make me prone to DVT's (bloodclots) and I have acquired one as well.  So I was sent to a hematologist.  He wasn't in favor of the gastric bypass surgery as a whole and wanted me to think about it.  He said I was ok to have surgery, but wouldn't recommend the filters because it could increase my chances of bloodclots and he believes in prevention.  In the letter that was sent to the surgeon and my GP stated that he didn't recommend the filters, but that he leaned toward me not having the surgery then and waiting 4 months to see if my bloodwork changed (which it could).  So the surgeon decided that I was too much of a risk and decided not to do the surgery.  My insurance has since changed, of course, and now I am back to square one.  I've been trying to get a one-on-one meeting with the surgeon to explain the letter he received as well as explain the reasoning behind it.  My GP was disappointed and wants me to contact the surgeon as well.  There is a break in the communication and it needs to be fixed.  I understand the surgeons point of view, he is only going by a letter and I don't fault him for taking the precautions to cover himself, but now I'm more frustrated than ever.  Not to mention my sister has already had the surgery and my mom has also had the lapband surgery done.  Now they're losing weight and here I am stuck in the same spot.  My time will come someday, I hope!
