University Medical Center

"Although my stay was mostly psositve. I did have some complaints. The radiology department was not very receptive to my needs after surgery during the swallow evaluation. My discharging nurse should have been more receptive to my needs as a bariatric patient (I needed a large wheelchair). I was also disappointed with the nursing staff's assistant with my ADLs ( I was never offered any help to bathe)."

James Lau

"Dr Lau was very knowledgable about my previous surgery and the options we had based on that. He was not only very caring, but also encouraging to me. His nurse, Robyn, is wonderful and very helpful. I can really relate to her since she had the RNY done and has been very successful. Dr Lau has an outlined aftercare schedule of appointments that he makes patients agree to follow. At first there was no support group set up, but they do have one now! Dr Lau went over the risks and benefits of the possible surgery choices, and allowed me to come to the decision of which choice was best for me. Dr Lau took great care of me while I was in the hospital. My surgery was much lengthier and more complicated than originally expected, and I felt so safe in his hands. I stayed in the hospital longer than expected and each day he gave me his take on the situation, but always allowed my thoughts and feelings on the mattters to be important in his decisions about my care. Of course, your surgeon's competence is paramount in choosing, but bedside manner is also very important. If you're not comfortable with the person doing your surgery, you won't be comfortable with him or her afterwards, and that is so important. You will be more successful if you trust and feel comfortable with your surgeon and their staff. I know this from past experience!!"
