Christmas 2007

Dec 20, 2007

12-21-07  Wow, my 6 month surgiversary was yesterday.  I have lost 105# and feel wonderful.  Have not reduced any meds yet, due to having the stroke, but my CPA is definitely at a lower setting.  I am forever grateful that I did this because recovering my health is the best Christmas present ever!!! Happy holidays to all.

Update

Oct 23, 2007

10-23-07  I am sleeping again-hooray!.  The medical supply company changed my CPAP to an 'auto' model, which automatically adjusts to the pressure I need.  It works great!  I'm feeling good-have lost 89#.  The challenge is avoiding carbs, my weakness.  However, the nut says I'm doing great with protein at meals, so I don't need to add protein supplements.  She is pleased with my progress.  My shortfall is that I haven't been doing all the calcium, so I need to work on that.  Life continues to be a journey in weightloss because it is ever present, but the results are so worth it.

I haven't posted in awhile, must be getting lazey-NOT!  I'm 4 months out, feeling great, have lost 83#.  Am starting to incorporate exercise, including swimming, biking and walking.  It actually feels good and I want to do it!  That' s quite a change for me.  I feel so much healthier, I can't believe it.  The only issue currently is that I'm getting very tired and not sleeping well at night.  Am going to doctor today.  I think my CPAP for sleep apnea is set too high for me now that I have lost weight.  As a result, I breathe through my mouth at night, and am not feeling rested.  Hopefully this will be a simple solution.  I went to Swapkins a couple of weeks ago-what a great idea, and a place to meet so many wonderful people.  It was very nice to get some additions to my wardrobe, as people notice baggy clothes!

Update 8-27-07

Aug 27, 2007

I'm just over 2 months out and have lost 67 pounds.  After being on a plateau for about 3 weeks, I am again starting to lose.  Each day I make choices about food, and the temptations are always there, but sometimes they don't bother me at all.  I can go to bed each night knowing that I did my best that day, and that I will continue to lose the weight I need to.  My confidence has grown and I definitely feel healthier.  Right now my struggle is to increase exercise.  It's still too easy to talk myself out of it because I get fatigued easily, but I am committed to making this work.  It's a matter of learning to balance a demanding job, and home with teenage son and 90+ mother and 3 dogs.  Life is never boring at my house!
My son and I are going out of town this weekend and I know we will do lots of walking.  I may even get brave and swim in the hotel pool!  Like everyone else, I am so happy I made the decision for surgery and will continue to move forward in my life.

Update 7/16/07

Jul 17, 2007

Well, it's almost 1 month since surgery and I am down 51 lb.  Feeing good about that.  I'm still really tired every day, but some of that has to do with the stroke.  I won't go back to work for a couple more weeks.  Food is going well and I am trying new things every day within the guidelines.  I'm quickly learning what works for me.  I am going to shop some of the secondhand stores to pick up a few work clothes before my return to work.  This week is also my first visit to the surgeon since my surgery.  It will be interesting to hear their comments.

Well, it has been an eventful 10 days for me.  The surgery itself went fine.  In pre-op, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic they gave me.  There was a reason that God delayed my surgery that morning-so I didn't go into surgery with more antibiotics.  Surgery was good, I was up, and had my liquids the next day and was discharged in the afternoon.  I got home & started having pain & difficulty swallowing.  Within 6 hours I was readmitted to the hospital with extreme pain and labored breathing.  An MRI determined that I had so much internal swelling that everything was blocked off.  So, nothing by mouth for me, and morphine for the pain. (I also had an allergic reaction to the Dilaudid post op for pain).  Then I developed an infection in my lungs because I couldn't breathe deeply.  That was controlled with antibiotics.  I started to feel better, resume liquids and walking after about 4 days.  I was feeling great, almost no pain.  However, they were having trouble controlling my blood pressure.  On day 6, I had a stroke.  God was again watching over me because I had a friend visiting, who is a nurse.  She noticed my mouth start to droop and my speech become garbled, and alerted my nurse.  They called in the Rapid Response Team and I was surrounded by people.  It was pretty scary.  I had an MRI, MRA, Carotid Ultrasound and Echocardiogram.  Determined it was definitely a stroke, but no clots or blockage.  They think it was probably caused by the extreme fluctuations in my blood pressure.  I spent 4 days in the heart hospital and came home yesterday.  I'm feeling good, absolutely no pain, can eat and drink appropriately, but am very fatigued.  I can do short walks, and the doctors expect the weakness and facial droop to totally disappear.  Each day is a little better. I've lost 35 lbs since my pre-op liquid diet that began on 6/6.  I am blessed to be alive and hope to continue my recovery in a positive manner.

Countdown

Jun 17, 2007

Today is June 17, only 3 more days.  I've settled into the liquid diet (only took 11 days!), but will be ready to move ahead to the post-op side.  My son is still very concerned about my surgery.  We are spending lots of time together & I know we will both be glad when the surgery part is done.  The doctor is also going to repair the hiatal hernia-yeah!  I'll be good as new-lol!

It's getting closer!

Jun 11, 2007

I'm on day 6 of the liquid diet.  It's not much fun, but with each day that passes, I know I am closer to joining the loser's bench.  It's interesting to be on the liquid diet knowing that I my stomach is the older, bigger one-the one that is tempted by all the things that got me here.  However, with each day passing, I am proving to myself that I can succeed and conquer the part of me that has kept me fat throughout my life.
