Update

Mar 14, 2007

The past few weeks have flown by.  I've lost 46 pounds, so far.  I've gone from a 20 to a 16.  Woohoo!!!
Went to my first support group meeting last night at CMC-Union.  We'll be meeting the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 in the cardiac waiting room.
Last night's meeting was an absolute blast.  We shared experiences (some had me in stitches!)and recipes.
I've been working out and my job can be pretty physical.  I still get kind of tired if I've had an exhausting day.

Post-op

Had surgery exactly one week ago.  I developed a sinus infection while in the hospital, so ended up staying one more day because of a fever.  This has been a bad year for my sinuses, anyway.  Otherwise, all went without a hitch.  I haven't been hungry at all.  I was able to start on pureed foods today.  It's strange what you crave.  I started with cottage cheese and then some tuna.  It was so good.
Since the surgery, I've only had one gagging incident that was a little unpleasant.  The liquid form of the pain reliever reminds me of cough medicine which always makes me gag anyway.  Otherwise, no throwing up at all.  Jodi, Dr. Kuwada's nutritionist, was really good at explaining everything.  Small portions have paid off.
I don't have any scales at home, so I haven't weighed yet.  I did put on a pair of pre-surgery jeans today with ease, despite the fact that I'm still swollen.  It was nice not to have to lay down on the bed to get them on. LOL!
One weird thing happened in the hospital.  I was laying there the day after the surgery watching Martha Stewart.  She mentioned that one of her favorite breakfasts was poached salmon.  I like salmon, but have never had it poached.  They displayed a little plate with three pieces of salmon, three pieces of honeydew melon and three small slices of apricot.  It looked like a feast to me.  It also looked so good.  I thought it will be nice when a breakfast like that fills me up.

Date set

Woohoo!  My surgery date has been set for January 8th, 2007.  I had my pre-op doctor's appointment today and saw the nutritionist one more time.  Dr. Kuwada and his staff have been so nice.  It took two tries to get everything through insurance, but it was finally approved (thanks to Justina).  Jody, the nutritionist, is wonderful and full of information.  Dr. Kuwada has been great with answering all of my questions.  I feel very fortunate to have been referred to him.
I've started the pre-op diet, so we'll see how I feel my the end of the week. LOL

Negative pressure from MOM

Oct 22, 2006

Mom called last night to tell me more bad things about her friend that had RNY a few months ago (in a different city with a different doctor).  Her friend has had repeated problems, so when Mom found out I was having the surgery, she went on a campaign to tell me all the things that could happen.  I've had the whole conversation about being fully aware of all the issues and that I've got total confidence in my doctor.  Doesn't mean anything to her.  I was so tired last night , after working all day, so she managed to have me in tears before the end of the conversation.  I'm at a loss.  I can't even bring myself to call her.
