2 years later. . .

Nov 08, 2010

I promised myself that I would be a diligent participant in this forum after my surgery.  I spent countless hours on this site prior to surgery and learned so much from so many wonderful people.  I sure blew that.  I have no excuse except life got in the way.

2 years ago I weighed over 435 pounds (that was the last official weight I had - hard to find scales that go that high).  I was nearly dead.  I had severe sleep apnea, pitting edema, was borderline diabetic, had high blood pressure, couldn't walk 100 yards without needing to sit down.  I was a hot mess.  I had tried every diet, had spent thousands of dollars with a personal trainer working out four days a week - to no avail, I couldn't get the scale to budge.

After countless hours of research I decided I wanted a DS.  I was blessed to happen upon the profile of a great woman that pointed me in the direction of Dr Baltasar in Alcoy, Spain.  We cashed in my husbands 401 and on November 1, 2008 I left DC for Spain with my husband and my mom.

As it turns out Dr B couldn't perform a full DS due to the lack of space to work and sever adhesions from a prior hernia operation.  I have to admit that I was disappointed at first but -- now I am glad.

My journey hasn't picture perfect but, I have had very few issues and in 2 years I have lost 227 pounds.  I have lost more than I currently weigh -- that is such a bizarre thought to process.  I was wearing a size 34 or 38 before my surgery.  I am sitting here now in size 16 jeans and an XL top from Old Navy.  Crazy -- right?  If I didn't have so many droopy bits I would probably be in size 12 jeans.  Wow.

There have been issues.  I couldn't seem to transition from liquids to mushies.  I spent the first 8 months throwing up a lot.  I have wicked acid reflux.  Prevecid is MY BEST FRIEND still.  I am still learning what foods are my friends.  I have a hard time with eggs, cottage cheese, lunch meat, beef, chicken - the list is long.  I eat a lot of soup, pork cooked silly in the crock pot, cheese, greek yogurt.  I just added oatmeal to the list.  Thank goodness I figured out early on that you can mix protein powder with espresso and make a coffee protein shake.  I just keep trying things until I find ones that work.

My labs have been great.  My energy level is off the charts. I have my life back.  It is amazing.

The Waiting (Weighting) is the Hardest Part

Jul 09, 2008

So, I did the reseach, got a plan. Made a date with Dr B in Spain.  Presented plan to DH--fully on board, presented plan to BFF's - mostly on board, presented plan to Parental Type Units -- little spastic about foreign country but altogether on board.  Found benefactor to generously give me many US dollars (I think) - Plan B, raid hubby's 401-K.

Now I just have to:  transfer over my entire company from their geriatric legacy software to new improved software, purchase and implement payroll system and stave off the nervous breakdown so that I can become a "*itch with a switch".

I have become a total OH junkie and am boring those around me with "tales from the ds message board".
