6 Month Check Up This Week!

Feb 09, 2008

This week I will have my 6 month check-up with Dr. Spaw.  I am anxious to see how the scales at the office are different from my cheap-o ones here at home.  As of about a week ago, I have lost 116 pounds!!!  Been stalled for awhile....I guess it's just slowing down for me.  I haven't lost much since Christmas.  I am working out or walking at the YMCA at least 5 days a week.  That is something I never could have done before!  The cool thing is:  I love it!  It makes me feel so much better just to go walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes or do the 30-minute express workout.  I hate it when I miss a day.  You never would've heard that from me before surgery!

3 Months Out / 90 Pounds Gone

Dec 03, 2007

It's been just about 3 1/2 months since my RNY surgery.  I have lost 90+ pounds and have gone from a tight size 30/32 to a loose size 22.  A 20 might fit!  It has been amazing!  My only regret is the same many others have said---I wish I had done it sooner!  I feel so much better.  I can walk all day and not be out of breath or get so tired that I don't think I'll make it back to the car.  I don't have to stop to rest every few steps when I go to the mall.  I don't dread taking the stairs any more.  My house is cleaner than it has been since we moved in (over a year ago) because I have the energy to keep it clean!  Sometimes I have to make myself go to bed!

Well...haven't posted since surgery--SORRY!
It went well...except for my blood pressure getting REALLY low.  They had to give me blood.  I stayed in the hospital a little longer than I thought I would, but Dr. Spaw knew best.  I slept in the recliner for the first week!  It was much easier than the bed.  I couldn't lie down flat--it hurt!  The worst thing that happened was the TERRIBLE yeast infection from the antibiotics they pumped me full of during surgery.  My skin looked as though it had been burned!  It actually peeled!  Dr. Spaw was wonderful!  He's the best--such a caring doctor!  If you are considering this surgery and haven't chosen a surgeon--he is heaven sent!

2 Weeks 'til Surgery!

Jul 29, 2007

Starting the 2 week diet tomorrow!  Two Slim Fast shakes and one Lean Cuisine per day the first week...4 Slim Fast shakes per day the second week.  Plus water, water, water every day!  Lose weight and shrink that liver!  I have to say that I am honestly NOT nervous.  I made this decision with God's help through prayer and I know it is the right decision!

7/18/07 My surgery is scheduled!!!

Jul 19, 2007

I saw Dr. Spaw for the first time today--he's great!  God knew what he was doing when he guided me to him!  My surgery is scheduled for August 13th.  I am excited!  I can't wait to be a "loser" and be healthier!  That's all I want...to be healthier!  The weight loss will just be a nice side-effect of becoming healthy!!!  Again, thanks to everyone here on OH who has helped me get this far!  It's neat to be able say that I have friends all over my state to depend on--there are some wonderful, supportive people here!

7/9/07 I'M APPROVED!!!

Jul 09, 2007

I cannot believe that I wasn't denied on my first try!  I got the call just a little while ago from Dr. Spaw's office.  I have an appointment for my consult on July 18th.  I am excited and nervous all at the same time!!!
Thanks to all who have helped me get this far and thank God for anwsering prayers.  I truly believe he is in control of this....otherwise I would have been denied!

6/21/07 WAITING!!!

Jun 21, 2007

Well......it's all turned in!  I went by Dr. Spaw's office last Friday and turned in my 5 years worth of medical records, documentation of my 6 month diet for each month, documentation of my attempts at Weight Watchers....they already had my psych eval and nutrition consult.  I heard from Ebony (at Dr. Spaw's office) today, she said she has faxed everything to Cigna and we should know something in about 10-15 business days.

Now...I wait....

I'll have to call Cigna in about a week to see if they received my stuff--I can't just wait to hear back.  Everyone please pray that I will get approval on the first try!!!  I lost weight during the first three months of my 6 month diet, but ended up gaining 3 pounds overall thanks to my feet and legs swelling during the last three months....oh well, if I am approved, that is one less thing I will have to worry about after I get this weight off!!!

I want to say a great BIG THANK YOU to everyone on OH, especially the Tennessee message board, for support and advice!!!  It's so nice to have such wonderful people who have been through this journey!!!

Tomorrow is my psych eval--by phone since I am about 85 miles away.  I hope I do well--let's face it, I know I'm crazy....and I have been for a long time!!!!  I attended a seminar at Centennial this past Saturday--I liked Dr. Dyer.  I guess I'm still not sure which surgeon/hospital.....I've already started with Baptist so I'll probably stay there.  They are all good, I'm sure.  Halfway there on the 6 month physician supervised diet now!

Blog...?!?  Me???  Hmmm....
Well, I guess there's a first time for everything!

Here goes...
I "lurked" here at OH for probably a year.  After this past CHRISTmas, I decided this is going to be the year!  I am going to have surgery so I can get healthy and help make sure my family is healthier.  It's not about vanity--it's not about losing weight.  It's about wanting to be here for my family...for a l--o--n--g time.  I worry about my daughter...right now, she is headed down the same path as me--a "big girl"--I don't want that.  My son has Type 1 Diabetes--he is so strong--my hero.  I NEED to cook and buy healthier foods for him.  I want to be able to do anything they want me to do with them and right now, I can't.  I want to be able to exercise with them--even just a long walk.

So far, I've been to seminars at Vanderbilt and Baptist.  I'm scheduled to go to Centennial's seminar on the 31st of this month.  I wanted to go to each of these so that I can make an informed decision when I choose a hospital and surgeon.  Right now...I am feeling very confident with Baptist and Dr. Spaw.  My insurance, CIGNA, requires a 6 month physician supervised diet--I am halfway there--3 months to go.  I have begun to gather my 5 years worth of medical records.  I hope to have everything in order so that by the end of the 6 mo diet, I am ready!!
