3/24/07 - In WLS Purgatory?

Mar 24, 2007

OK...I'm no longer the same person because I've been learning to live a post-op lifestyle, but I'm not post-op yet, either.  I'm in a kind of WLS purgatory where I don't actually belong in either world.

WLS in 9 days!!!  I've been maintaining my pre-op weightloss...but it's pretty close.  So close, in fact, that I'm under my goal weight in the morning, but over it in the evening.  Is this too funny?...I've thought of going to Dr. Aranow's office and photographing my weight on his scale the morning of surgery just in case there is a descrepancy between his scale and the one at Middlesex Hosp!  Yup...too funny!  However, I have continued to increase my exercising and I feel good about that.  And Michelle has been like a bright shining star on a dark night with her honesty and support.  I'm looking forward to getting together again at the meeting Monday night (26th)...Michelle & I and our DHs.  We're off to the Tuscany Grill afterword.

Michelle turned me on to the UNJURY protein and I am SOOO glad she did.  We both bought the unflavored, but I also got samples of Vanilla and Chocolate.  They were BOTH SOOO FREAKIN" GOOD!!
I mixed them in skim milk and was incredibly impressed at how absolutely delicious they were!  My family members tasted it and thought the same.  One daughter said the Vanilla tasted like a Wendy's frosty.  Well, I don't eat those, so I can't agree or disagree, but I know I've found my post-op protein and that's all that matters to me!

3/13/07 - Could I SCREW THIS UP any MORE??!!

Mar 13, 2007

I'm so stressed and afraid of failing that I think I'm subconsciously sabatoging myself! (I'm so frustrated I can't even spell right!)
I'm sure I need to lose weight AGAIN before my surgery date.  I gave in to temptation 1 too many times and I'm pretty sure I regained 2-3 pounds!  I'm going to weigh myself at Dr. Aranow's office tomorrow before I do the hospital tour to see how much I'm off from my goal weight.
I'm pretty sure I can re-lose whatever I've gained before my April 2nd date, but that's not the point...I shouldn't have let it happen in the first place.  Beleive me, I'll be turning to you all for support (yet again!) as I need it.

3/10/07 - I HAVE A DATE!!!!!

Mar 09, 2007

Today's posts were so emotional that I'm almost ashamed to announce that I have a date of April 2nd.  I need approval from Anthem, but it is my understanding that they are pretty good, so I'm quite hopeful.  FINALLY...I can be the one to raise my hand when they ask about surgery dates at the next meeting I attend!  On the 14th, my husband and I will be going to the Middlesex Hospital N4 informational session, as will "Michelle Ma Belle" and her other half.  The four of us plan to go to dinner afterwords to celebrate our pending surgeries...her's is March 28th!  YIPPEEEEE!!!!!

I've been holding off on buying tickets to the gala in case I got a surgery date.  Strange, I know, but I didn't want to be too early post-op to go, or as is the case, have a date so soon after an event with so much temptation (ie: too good a mood around good food!).  I will DEFINATELY make it a point to go to next year's event, so Deb will need to save me two tickets when the time comes!!!  OMG!!!  I MIGHT even be able to wear shoes with HEELS to that!!!

I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!!  OH members are such an AWESOME supportive group!!!

2/23/07 - WHEW!

Feb 23, 2007

OK...I had some popcorn and a "little bit" of Goobers at the movie theater last night...I'm ok with it cause it was a LOT better than the last time I went, and it was what I intended to do as part of "weaning" myself off theater food altogether.  Next time, no Goobers at all and minimal popcorn.  After that, it'll be sugarfree hard candy only.  If I don't take it slowly, I won't make it happen.  Like when I finally quit smoking about 4 years ago.  Same rules, different addiction!  :-)

Now the good stuff...I just did the "Miracle Mile" on the treadmill again in 25 minutes (2.5mph) PLUS an extra 1/4 mile stroll!  That's definately over my goal of 20 minutes at 2.3mph!  (patting self on back)

Finally...I actually feel "at peace" about seeing the psychologist in 3 DAYS!!!!  I'm not freaking out any more cause she already saw me once before and I didn't get comitted to CT Valley Hospital so I must not have done too badly.  I still hope I don't have to take those tests though...what a pain in the butt.

A Zen Moment... I watched a male Robin eating berries in a snow-covered tree this morning.  The Robin (being a traditional sign of Spring and nature's rebirth) made me think that maybe I'll be having my re-birthday soon.  And that's just how I see it.  WLS is like being born a second time.  From waking up after surgery, going through the food stages, getting to know your new self and then learning how to live again.

2/20/07 - MAGIC MILE!

Feb 20, 2007

YIPPEEEEE!!!!!  I FINALLY made that MAGIC MILE marker on the treadmill!!!  It took me 25 minutes (2.5 mph), but I did it!  I soooooooo rock!!!!!

2 of my daughters and I each have a graph on the refrigerator that states each of our weekly exersize goals and we use it to mark our progress.  It's good cause we can see how each other is doing and gives us motivation (and sometimes, bragging rights!).  We'll use it as long as it keeps us going.

I ordered the Gazelle Sprinter (Tony Little) which I expect will arrive in a week-10 days.  With that, we can work out two at a time!  How's THAT for motivation!....Don't want to let MOMMY kick their BUTTS!!!!

I can't wait for the Psych eval...one might say I'm "psyched" about it???  I tentatively scheduled my surgury approval visit with my primary care MD for March 5th...one week after the psych eval.  Woooo Hoooo!!!

2/16/07 - WHAT A MONTH ALREADY!

Feb 16, 2007

I was really sick for almost 2 weeks...as in "stay in bed and sleep all day" sick.  I had a sinus infection that really wiped me out!  I was put on Zithromax and got bronchitis 4 days into it!  I had to be put on another high dose regime of antibiotics for that (I've had pneumonia before and do NOT need it again!)

I LOVE being on the Lantus...40units a day and I'm good to go...actually, my fastings run between 75 & 100, sometimes a bit less.  I did gain a few pounds from it, but it came back off after my body adjusted to it.  My last A1C was 8.8...but for the past three weeks, I've been running the equivelent of 5.5-6!  I was supposed to wait a while longer to have another test, but I got too antsy and had one done anyway, just for the heck of it.  Well, as it turned out, my A1C WAS 7.2!!!  YEAH!!  I got THAT goal accomplished!!

While I was sick, but not really bad yet, I went to Aranow's for my galbladder ultrasound (ok, I admit, I would have gotten myself there by ambulance if necessary...appointments are so far off). I have no idea how it went...no news is good news? HOWEVER, I did have them weigh me and they said I only needed to lose 1 more pound to reach my pre-surgery goal!!

A
week later, I met with the dietitian and she said she was done with me and OK-ing me for the WLS.  I met my pre-surgery weight-loss goal, so that's it!!!  My only goals now are to keep the weight off and try not to act psychotic during my psych visit on the 26th!!!

Let me back up a bit...the weather was looking pretty bad for the 14th, I called to change my psych appointment.  When I did, the receptionest told me I couldn't get in for another MONTH!  Of course, I whined a little about it.  Eventually, she remembered there was a posibility I could get in sooner if I was willing to see Kim Daniels instead of Scott Jones.  (She came back a little early from maternity leave, bless her soul!)  I said "HECK YAH!"  cause SHE'S the person I saw when I originally started this process in 2004!!!!  She already saw me once so maybe she won't make me repeat the testing!  Even if she does, I'm not too worried about it.  So, my appointment isn't until the 26th of this month.  I'm gonna call my primary care MD on Monday and make a pre-op clearance appointment for a week after my psych consult, just to keep things moving.
WOOOO HOOOO!

1/29/07 - Official Weight Gain :-(

Jan 29, 2007

It's official...I've GAINED 2.5 pounds instead of losing weight this week.  I know in my HEAD that it's GOT to be related to the Lantus, but in my HEART, it feels like I've failed myself.

Oh, well...nothing I can do but try to move forward and hope for the best.  I contacted the dietician and she made some suggestions that I will CERTAINLY follow!  On the bright side, I have my gallbladder ultrasound in 4 days!  One more test under my belt will help me feel a tiny bit better about making some progress.  And, my blood sugar checks have been SOOOOO GOOD, dare I say PERFECT!!?  Someone said that will reduce my liver size also!  YEAH!!!

1/27/07 - Good, Bad and the Ugly :-(

Jan 27, 2007

The good...?  My endoscopy is over.  The doctor took a biopsy that he said was "consistant with gastritis" so when the lab results are back late next week, I might have to take an antibiotic, but other wise, it was uneventful.  I was also able to sustain 20 minutes on the treadmill today at 2.5 MPH.  I admit to cheating by using analgesic patches on my lower back before getting on.  It's lower back pain that usually prevents me from staying on for long.  Hopefully it will let up after a while.

The bad...?  I gained weight instead of losing it!  The doctor told me some people gain weight when they go on Lantus (which I recently did).  So, as luck would have it, instead of losing like I need to in order to have the surgery, I'm going in the opposite direction!  I'll never get the surgery at this rate!  That brings me to the ugly...

The ugly...?  My mood lately!  I gained weight while sticking to my diet so, out of frustration, I allowed myself to cheat by having Goober's when my husband and I went to a movie.  HOW STUPID WAS THAT???!!!  Now I'll probably gain another pound!

I'm going to put together a list of my most vulnerable dieting situations and come up with several opposing behaviors for each so I'll be ready when something like this happens again.  I would like to know how others cope during their times of weakness.

1/24/07 - It was a "YEAH" day!

Jan 24, 2007

Ok...first off, the cardiologist said my heart is fine and he doesn't see any reason to hold off on the WLS from his perspective, soooo...YEAH!

2nd, I made it to the YMCA (finally) to use the Lap Pool.  I haven't been swimming in years.  I did laps (the crawl)for 20 minutes and let me tell you...it kicked my ASS, soooo...YEAH!!!!

3rd, I checked out the Guppy pool where the aqua exercise classes are held and I think my knees will be able to handle the ladder to get in and out, soooo...YEAH!!!!

4th, and quite importantly, I've FINALLY gotten my blood glucose under control, sooo....A REALLY BIG FAT YEAH!!!!!!!

It's been so long since I had such a good day that I had forgotten what it's like, soooo....YEAH for me!

1/22/07 - WEIGH DAY

Jan 22, 2007

OK...only lost 2 lbs this past week...bummer.  Was hoping for 2.5-3Lbs.  Guess it'll have to do.

I had such a ROUGH WEEK...I get sooo hungry all the time from a few days before my period until it's over.  I actually had to work in THREE SNACKS YESTERDAY!  I did NOT go over my daily limit for calories, carbs or fat though...I'm pretty darned proud of that one, let me tell ya!

I joined the YMCA today.  the LAP POOL has steps so I'll use that, but I'm hoping I can participate in the water exercise class they have in the Guppy pool.  Unfortunately, that pool only has access via a ladder, so we'll see.

I have now officially attended MORE then the required 3 suppport group meetings for Dr. Aranow's patients.  Of course, I'll continue going cause they're a really great group and well worth the hour drive!

Well...off to bed for me...
