Mini goals

Oct 17, 2008

I've set a few mini goals for myself. I think sometimes when you have so much to lose, it can get very overwhelming, and you can lose sight of the big picture. There is no more than 21 pounds between any of the goals. I think it will help keep me on track.

I started out at 286 and my goal is 155. That's a total of 131 pounds to lose.
My first mini goal was 249 because it was closer to the 100's than the 300's. I hit that on my surgery day. Actually I skipped 249 and ended up at 248.
Here are my other goals:

236 - 50 pounds lost
220 - Halfway to main goal
199 - Under 200
191 - No longer considered obese
186 - 100 pounds gone
175 - This is my smallest ever weight, and my biggest mini goal
159 - No longer overweight
155 - Main goal

8 more pounds to the next goal!

Pre-op appointment

Oct 09, 2008

I just got back from my pre-op appointment. Since my doctor is about an hour and a half away, it was a pretty long day for me.
For whatever reason, Dr. Jawad requires someone over 18 to accompany you to the pre-op, so I brought my sister. It was never really made clear what the other person is to be there for, so she pretty much just read the whole time. I guess it's so she has an idea of what to expect as well.
The appointment was for 9:00. They started by checking my weight, blood preasure and temperature as usual but they also took a couple before pictures. They put the band people (all 3 of us) in one area and the RNYers in the main waiting room. There were a lot more of them then there were of us.
Dr. Jawad came back and gave some in depth information about the band. He is very realistic about the results and stresses that we have a lot of work to do on our own to make it work.
Then we each went into the separate patient rooms where he went over our charts. He mentioned that my ultrasound shower gallstones and that he can remove my gallbladder if I wanted him to. My primary doc and I talked about it and decided that would be the best way to go, so I told him to get rid of it.
I was given my scripts to get filled before surgery. One was for Lortab and one was for an anti nasuea medicne. My only problem is that I have a sensitivity to hydrocodone so I wasn't sure if I could take the Lortab. Unfortunately Dr. Jawad had just left for the hospital so he wasn't around to write something different. They told me to stop by after my testing because he should be back by then. I called when I was done with everythig and he was still at the hospital. I will have to wait until Monday to get it taken care of then. That should be interesting.
The testing I just mentioned was at the hospital. I had blood work, urinalysis, EKG and a chest X-Ray.
Part of the blood work is type and cross. Apparently when they do the type and cross, you have to wear a red wristband that they put the information into. Because that information is inside the wristband, you have to be careful not to get it too wet. I didn't want to deal with that and I didn't want to deal with people asking me what it was for, so I decided to do the type and cross on Monday morning before surgery. I am a naturally hard stick, so the person drawing the blood recommended that I drink lots and lots of water up until the midnight cut off to hydrate myself and make it easier to get my blood. I guess I will be in the bathroom all night.
EKG and chest x-ray were no biggie. I was pretty much in and out.
Before I left I was given antiseptic soap to shower with the night before and the morning of the surgery. It smells like liquor but it does the job, so I shouldn't complain.
Despite the long day, everything seemed to run very smoothly.

So that's about it. Surgery is in just a few days. I am getting more and more anxious each day.

I got my date!!

Aug 19, 2008

It's so hard sometimes for me to sit back and let someone else take over, so waiting to hear back from the surgeon's office after submitting my paperwork was not easy. It took a few weeks (and a few anxious phone calls) but I finally got my date! I have my pre-op appointment on October 9th and the surgery will be on the 13th!
I can't believe in just under 2 months I will be banded!!

My part is done, now I wait

Jul 17, 2008

I had the last appointment in my 6 months of required doctor supervised weight loss. I thought it would take forever, but actually it went by pretty quickly. It gave me the time I needed to get all the required tests, nutritionist and psych consult out of the way. It also gave me ample time to wrap my head around the fact that I am about to have life-changing surgery. I can't imagine squeezing everything into just a few months, and I certainly can't imagine jumping into a new lifestyle that quickly.
I lost 22 pounds in the 6 months. I wasn't paying too much attention to the exact weight, as long as it was going down each visit. I was surprised it had gone down that much because I didn't feel any different. It was a pleasant surprise though. That's 22 less pounds to lose.
So now I'm waiting for them to get all my paperwork together and submit it to insurance. My part is done, now I'm waiting on them.
