6 Month Update

Jan 23, 2009

I've been on a 4 week stall - down 87lbs.  I'm totally happy with that!  It's putting a damper on my goal of -100lbs by my 34th birthday, January 24 - which is also my 6 month mark, but I'll live if I don't make it.  Although I'm not losing lbs, I am shrinking.  I guess my body is catching up with the lbs lost.  My clothes are falling off.  I'm too cheap to go buy some that fit - since they won't fit for long - my mom felt sorry for me & bought me a couple new shirts last week when she went out-of-town.  (No clothing stores in this freakin' tiny town.) - They’re a little too small, so I'll have to wait.  My wardrobe has increased though because of all the clothes that used to fit me!

The parents, D & my sister & her husband all chipped in & got me Wii with Fit, & a couple other games I wanted for Xmas.  It was a total surprise & showed me even more how much they support me.  I've wanted it, but wouldn't/couldn't spend the $$. (Gonna be paying the bank for my surgery for the next 6 years!) So they got me something they knew I wanted & would use.  I am having so much fun with it.  It'd rather WiiFit than go to the gym, so I'm playing so much!  I'm still walking on my lunch break & eating in between patients.  It seems to be working. My labs all look good, so that means I'm doing something right!

I
had a scare in December.  I had blood in my (diarrhea) stool for about 3 weeks. I talked to my boss (Dr. who is also a surgeon) & he told me to talk to Dr. Husted.   Dr.  Husted didn't think it had anything to do with my DS, but wanted me to see a Gastroenterologist to be sure.  I told my boss, who called the Gastro & told him about my DS (Gastro was well informed & knew difference between DS & RNY!!!).  Anyway I had to get an endoscopy & colonoscopy! YUCK!  Anyway, I have been taking 800mg Ibuprofen 3x per day for my back pain - I have bleeding ulcers in my stomach - not on my scar line (which is apparently healed beautifully & the gastro said Husted did a perfect job!), inflammation in my stomach AND a polyp in my colon (he removed & it was benign), & microscopic colitis (inflammation in my colon) from the stupid ibuprofen use over the last 18 months! I am glad it's not surgery related, but I have to go through finding pain meds that work & don't inflame my intestines!  Apparently it has nothing to do with my DS!

I also learned that I have my own kind of "dumping syndrome".  If I eat something I shouldn't, such as Ice Cream or crackers, I get really bad cramps & feel terrible for about 2 hours, until after it works its way through my digestive system.  I guess I know to avoid these things, unless I want to feel like shit!

I think I'll be bald in another month.  I already had super-baby-fine hair & the extra hair loss is taking its toll.  I have tried all the remedies I've heard of: Biotin, Zinc, Selenium, Protein & water.  I am somewhat worried about my hair loss. I know it's a part of surgery & I don't regret my surgery in the least, but I am worried about my balding head.  I have to wear a hat when its cold - as I'm freezing & I've never been one for hats (headaches), but it's worth it to stay warm!

Even with my weight loss, my back pain is still there so it's been a bit frustrating.  I was hoping so much that I would have some relief. I suppose I'm used to the disappointment, as I've been living in this pain for almost 2 years, but I kind of had my heart set on some relief with weight loss.  I suppose there is always hope that one day the pain will just stop, but my optimism seems to be hard to find.

So, the past 6 months have been an adventure & I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything!
