My Journey

Dec 10, 2010

My journey started 10 years ago. That's when I started researching WLS. Really going going at it aggressively 4 yrs ago 2007. I found out my insurance required a 12 month supervised diet and PCP visits. I got discouraged and didn't do it. I was going through Barix at the time, they called back about 6 months later and said the insurance lowered the requirements to 6 months I said okay and that was doable so I started the visits a couple of months after that. I went through all that to get denied due to not enough documentation.

Barix called back some time later to say they lowered the requirements again to 3 months I said I can definitely do that, so I signed up for Medical Weight Loss, tried it again. Got my paperwork to Barix and said I have more to give you, they sent the paperwork in incomplete of course I was denied. So now I'm on my 2nd denial. I got all the paperwork in to Barix and got my third denial due to not enough documentation.

I went to see Dr.Michael Wood he and Dr. Sapala invented the Sapala-Wood pouch, which is smaller than the regular pouch. The secret they say is the size of the pouch. Anyhoo for some reason I wasn't feeling him so I chilled for a while and ate my self up to my highest weight ever 389 !!! that was January 2010 By this time I'm suffering with all the obesity related health problems .....

My health was failing I now had type II diabetes, HBP, sleep apnea, skin rashes, osteoarthritis in my knees. that's when I started making a conscious effort to change my eating habits I lost a few pounds but nothing to make a  big difference in my weight,  But what was different this time is I kept it off for like 6 months that's when I knew I was really ready for weight loss surgery....

In August 2010 I was having trouble with my computer at work they called in a computer tech to fix the computers. We were talking and out  ofthe blue he says I just had GB ... My eyes lit up I asked him all kinds of questions. I was asking him bcuz our insurance is hard to get an approval he proceeded to tell me he went to Dr. Hares through St. John Providence. I made my seminar appointment for September 8th. I proceeded to do my 3 month appointments, paperwork was submitted to the insurance on Nov 21st. I was finally approved around Dec.2nd and scheduled for surgery Dec 28th 2010 YAAAAYYYY !!!!

This gave me no time to prepare for surgery, I hadn't started Christmas shopping, and to top things off I just started a new job so I was in training. I'm going through a divorce so I did all my running around by myself.

Dec. 28th, 2010

Fast forward to surgery day ......

I was scheduled for surgery at 7am so I had to arrive at 5am. I had my mom and dad with me. All I remember is getting the epidural and being rolled in to surgery at 7:30am It was very cold in the OR. I was told to get on a different table and to put my arms out to the side  next thing I remember is waking up and being rolled to my room  I think it was close to 2pm by this time.

I can't say enough about the staff and nurses on the 6th floor at St. John Providence. OMG !!! They were fantastic !!! I didn't want for anything didn't have to wait for anything, one of the nurses even prayed with me I was so scared my heart rate started going up. I had a 4 day hospital stay

My Recovery.......

I went for the Duodenal Switch known as DS.  I'm currently 18 days out and down 22lbs. My surgery was open therefore I have an 8 inch incision and my staples are still in. I have my first follow this Monday I hope to get them out then .

Recovery has been uneventful so far. With this open incision getting comfortable has been challenging.  If  I were able to exercise I'm sure I would be down a little more, but I'm not in a hurry, I didn' t put the weight on overnight.

I'm surprised at what I can eat so early out and how much.

That's it for now. I will keep you updated. Thanks for reading my story and following my journey.
