"Well, i don't quite understand how it can yet be labelled as a Center of Excellence in bariatrics. The surgeons may be excellent at operating, but everything else was less than desirable. The before and after patient care was rather weak. They kept giving me sugar-loaded food after surgery, which i could not eat/drink, and the toilet was not big-person friendly...i kept sitting on a handicap bar that was fixed to the wall nearly flush against the toilet. And while i had no problem with the bed there, I think some larger patients definitely would...and i had not seen any larger beds in the 'bed holding rooms'. I was not taken care of by special nurses who work just with bariatric surgery patients. I was in a room with two other people, who had had completely different kinds of surgeries, like eye and arm surgery. Not that i minded, but i guess i thought i would see other WLS patients there. The nurses and local nutritionist (food lady) didn't seem to have any proper knowledge of what can and cannot be eaten and drank by a post-op. The 'pamplet' of info i was given by my dietist had some bad examples of what to eat...a lot of bread, for instance. But overall, i did not have a bad experience there, and I am glad I've had my operation at this particular hopsital. I think being well prepared myself, and knowing what i can and cannot have, really helped me have a smoother experience there. Otherwise i probably would have been consuming nothing but sugary pudding, raw fruit smoothies, milk, sugary tea, and more sugary puddings. I stuck to broths and a little bit of some kind of mushy chicken and broccoli mixture. And water and hot tea. Also, the hospital has no support group(s), and neither of the surgeons do either. I thought that was required before one could be named a Center of Excellence in Bariatrics...? Something else i should mention, is that my 'date' was postponed many, many times because of hospital technicalities i guess you could say. They can never give you a real date. They call you 2 days before surgery to notify you, however, they DO tell you a time frame. For instance, they would say 'the beginning of April'. But it never was what they said it would be, and they never notify you to tell you that it will be later. Very frustrating."
