Life after Baby and WLS

Aug 07, 2009

Well OH! I had my baby girl on July 16th, 3 days after my birthday. I went in labor at 261 lbs. Today I am 220lbs. I am very proud of my progress. I do wish I had done more exercise even during my pregnancy because I have soo much loose skin now. I am doing some exercises that should hep but there is no guarantee. I posted some pics of the little lady and some more recent of myself while pregnant.

Ok, so its a new year, with the new me. I am 9-1/2 weeks pregnant. Its a big adjustment and something to get used to. I know the surgery was hard to deal with but now, I have double trouble. Believe me it is so hard to deal with. So to all those coming behind me, PLEASE get the birth control. You do not want to be like me. But the weightloss is steady a few pounds at a time, I feel really good about it. Ok tata for now.

Been 3 months

Nov 27, 2008

Well I have been a SAP for 3 months and I am not sure how I truly feel at this point. In some ways I feel like a failure and I wonder why I chose to do this. Maybe my timing was off because my life is so full of stress and pain that I can't focus on my goals. I keep stalling and I know why. My habits are not good at all and i don't have the routine I expected to have by this point. I feel like if I could do this the way I know I need to. I can't seem to find the time or serenity that I need to really do it. I need help.
On the other hand, I am happy with having SOME progress. I feel much better as a person for the leap that I have made. I would have never believed that I would ever have gotten out of the 300's. It feel amazing. My confidence is through the roof and I love myself now. I wonder if that is whats wrong with others around me. I heard that it could happen, just didn't think it was going to be in my house. I guess you live and learn and some lessons are hard and painful.

I want to say hello to all 51 of my OH friends and invite those who are not on my friends list to join and we can all hold hands and make a difference in our lives.

And the scale says...

5 days out

Sep 02, 2008

Hello I am posting to track my progress. I am having a good and uneventful recovery so far. I have a little bit of pain and discomfort that comes with being cut. I have no trouble out of any "food" that I drink. I am ok, not as much as I used to, but it has only been 5 days. I admit that I am having major food cravings, I don't want to devour anything but I do want to taste it. I know in time the liquids will be behind me and I will be able to have food again. I am looking forward to making healthier choices and working out  The pain meds keep me sleepy, but I welcome the rest especially after a good walk. My 3 year old son is really concerned about the incisions. Naturally he doesn't understand what I have done. In a way I know that my decision to have WLS will protect his future.

From the Wagon Master ...

Aug 30, 2008

You have healed from surgery and want to start some gym action. Well let's get you there without wasting your time and energy. To lose fat, you have to create a calorie deficit, working out helps with this and if done correctly, you will keep losing fats until you hit your goal weight. Let's get to work!

First thing we want to do is get your daily numbers to burn 1-2lbs per week. (Bodyweight x 12 for men and 10 for women). This is your minimum amount of calories you should eat a day, anything less than this could stall your progress and cause your body to lower it's metabolism rate. On rest days, you should eat this number, this is because you are not as active and the body is healing (We want to body to dip into fat storage as well these days to make up any deficit needed to rebuild muscles).

For approximately 5 days, you should eat at this number while working out in the gym. On the weekends, you want to rest for 2 days and refeed.

Refeed= supplying the body with starchy carbs in order to refill muscle glycogen.

Muscle glycogen is stored glucose the body uses throughout the week to help with activities and body functions. When these levels are depleted to a certain point, the body will tap into fat reserves. It takes about 3 days to deplete the muscles of glycogen, day 4 and 5, the body will be burning fats.

On the rest days, the body must refill muscle glycogen levels and will not store fats until these levels are filled (Approximately 2000 calories of carbohydrates). Below is a sample meal plan for the week.

Weekday Meal:

Breakfast:
Steel Cut Oatmeal
1 Scoop Protein Whey
1/3 c Raisins
1 tsp honey

Snack:
1 Packet Plain Grits
6 Egg Whites
1 Slice of American Cheese

Lunch:
Tuna Sandwhich on 100% Whole Wheat
Garden salad w/ Italian dressing
Apple or fruit salad

(1) Hour before workout have 1 cup of coffee or green tea
Workout: Weight train (Complete Body) + 30 Minutes light cardio

Post Workout Shake (PWO):
2 Scoop Protein Whey
1TSBP Flaxseed Oil

PWO Meal (1 Hour after workout):
4 oz Chicken Breast (Grilled, Baked, BBQ)
1 C Broccoli

Dinner:
4oz Chicken Breast (Grilled, Baked, BBQ)
Garden salad w/ vinegar and oil + almonds

Evening Snack:
Muscle sparing protein shake (Muscle Milk) to reduce catabolic state while sleeping and restore nitrogen balance for the muscles.

This meal plan packed with low GI carbohydrates will assist with muscle glycogen depletion throughout the week. In the early day, we had slow carbs to give us energy, as the day progressed, we tapered the carbs off to deplete muscle glycogen.

Weekday Meals (Rest Day) This menu stays sorta like the weekday but we will add a free meal for Saturday and Sunday.

Breakfast:
Steel Cut Oatmeal
1 Scoop Protein Whey
1/3 c Raisins
1 tsp honey

Snack:
1 Packet Plain Grits
6 Egg Whites
1 Slice of American Cheese

Lunch:
Wendy's Cheeseburger
French Fries
Ice Tea

NO WORKOUT (REST DAY MEANS REST)

Snack:
Chicken Salad on a bed of lettuce

Dinner:
4oz Chicken Breast (Grilled, Baked, BBQ)
Garden salad w/ vinegar and oil + almonds

Evening Snack:
Muscle sparing protein shake (Muscle Milk) to reduce catabolic state while sleeping and restore nitrogen balance for the muscles.

This is a sample of a refeed meal. There is one free meal on Saturday and Sunday only in order to restore glycogen levels inside the muscles. Your body will not store fat during this process, so enjoy whatever cravings you desired during the week.

Now the workout plan to shred the fat.

Monday:
Complete body workout + 30 Minutes Light Cardio
Chest
Back
Biceps
Triceps
Shoulders
Forearms
Abs
This should take about 1 hour to do 3 sets for each body group.
Ride the bike for 30 minutes

Tuesday
Cardio (30 Minutes of light cardio)

Wednesday
Complete body workout + 30 Minutes Light Cardio
Chest
Back
Biceps
Triceps
Shoulders
Forearms
Abs
This should take about 1 hour to do 3 sets for each body group.
Ride the bike for 30 minutes

Thurday:
30 Minutes light cardio (Walk 1-2 miles)

Friday:
Complete body workout + 30 Minutes Light Cardio
Chest
Back
Biceps
Triceps
Shoulders
Forearms
Abs
This should take about 1 hour to do 3 sets for each body group.
Ride the bike for 30 minutes

Saturday & Sunday
Rest (Absolutely no workouts)

This schedule will deplete muscle glycogen around Wednesday. Thurs-Friday, your body will be tapping into fat depots for energy (Believe it or not, a lot of fat will be converted these two days for energy for the brain). Saturday and Sunday will be solely for refilling muscles so you can workout the following week. When the body is refilling muscles, it will not store fat until the refill is complete. Here is a secret, 2 Free meals on the weekend is not enough to refill glycogen levels to the max, so the body will continue to dip into fat depots for energy (Pretty cool huh?)

Well, go out and hit the gym! Eat well and balanced for your body and shred the fats!

Big hugs
James

2 MORE DAYS

Aug 26, 2008

Okay, I have 2 more days and I am feeling anxious. I am so ready to be a loser. I want to say thsnks to all who are participating in OH because little do we know we are helping someone, somewhere. Since I have been on OH I have helped 4 people in my life make healthier choices for themselves. I feel better about myself. And I have met some awesome people and reconnected with those that I lost touch with. To Lana, (Snookie) thanks for contacting me and we will get together after healing. To Lorie W. Thanks for going to the meetings with me and we have got to get together soon, oh and thanks for the liquids jump start. To Kiki, you are the first person I connected with on OH and I follow your steps like a big sister, thanks. To raygirl414 I read your blog all the time because you keep it real. To Julie (tremeg2008) I will hope to see you before I leave the hospital and we will get back in touch during recovery, kiss the boys for me. To the Michigan board, thanks for getting me started and seeing me through. To BAF thanks for keeping it real for me, and James thanks for the eye candy and nerd stuff. To RNY board, You guys are great. If I forgot to say anything to any individual, don't take it personal, I love you. So all of you please pray for me and send me post so I have things to read when I get home. Somebody call me my number is on my OH cards. Love all of ya'll so much... See ya on the Bench.

10 days to go......

Aug 17, 2008

..... and I'm on the losers bench. I have to do a repeat sleep study tonight and then I have post-op nutrition tomorrow afternoon.  I am really excited and I spend the mornings tooking at everyones blogs to see how they're feeling. I am hoping for the best but I am aware of the fact that there could be some problems. I am on Day 5 of my 4 plus 1 liquid diet. Oh how I look forward to the plus 1 everyday. I struggle across the weekend and I did have two meals yesterday, but the first on was small and just a bowl of veggies. (Celery, Water chestnuts, mushrooms, and bean sprouts in a spicy sauce) I need to pump up my water and I have finally figured out a tasty way to make the shakes. I have limited access to a computer for the time being and I will post again as son as I can.
